Get In Shape Fast?

Is it possible, if I go to the gym about 4-5 times a week, to get in shape in 19 days?

I have something coming up, and I don't want to be mopping the floor with my tongue.

I'm thinking of running about 1 mile+ a day, in 19 days, I'd have to be able to run 5

Depends on the person.

My wife can not run for a year and turn around and run 3 miles without too many problems. If I take a month off and I'm huffing and puffing after a mile.

If you haven't been running at all, it's going to be pretty tough for a lay person to just up and run 5 miles with less than 3 weeks to work with.

I've been hitting the gym at least 5 times a week for the past month. 2-3 mile runs and free weights. Haven't noticed much difference.

So in 19 days, you need to run 5 miles? That the 'big thing' coming up?

Get on a good diet now, and run 3 miles about 4 days per week. Make sure to stretch before and after you run. Depending on how bad of shape you are in now, I wouldn't run every day for 19 days. You'll need some recovery time if you're out of shape to begin with. If you don't feel sore in your thighs/knees/shins after a few days, then I'd go ahead and run 3 per day every day though.

improper diet or overtraining may be the culprit here. How many times a week are you lifting?

It depends on how deconditioned you are in the first place.

True. If you're really out of shape you'll probably spend those 19 days breaking down your body before the build up begins. Also, how good of shape are you looking to be in 19 days? Not trying to get in shape for a marathon/ironman in 19 days are you?

I lift every other day, hitting different spots each time, usually I just do upper body one day, and lower body the following day, usually it's about 4-5 days a week. Diet wise, I've completely cut all sugars out of my diet (except from fruits) and only drink water. I also cut out fast foods and have been eating home made salads, skinless chicken, lean meat, that sort of stuff.

My body fat has gone down 1.5% but my weight has stayed the same.

Don't overtrain. Give yourself days after exercise for your body to build up, and a few days before the event to get to tiptop shape. That should help you quite a bit.

Keep in mind stretching a cold muscle is not effective.

Thats not true. Doing a light stretching routine prior to a run prevents injury and helps loosen up the muscles. You do have to be careful not to over stretch when the muscles are cold though.

This sounds like progress to me.

🙂 I guess you're right, although visually I haven't noticed it since my fat tends to linger around my midsection, which I understand is the hardest spot to hit.

Anecdotal evidence and scientific studies alike indicate that stretching cold muscles does more harm than good. At worst it is possible to injure yourself by stretching cold muscles, and at best you can do little to increase the flexibility of a cold muscle. Think of your muscles as being like a piece of taffy. Warm taffy stretches as far as you can pull it, but when cold, it can break into pieces in your hands.

Also when collagen is cold it will not stretch well.

Well, you're not supposed to do a hardcore stretch when cold. But some light, simple stretches before a run are very beneficial. If you wish, jog in place for a minute or so, then stretch.

If stretching cold muscles was bad, then you wouldn't see 3/4s of the people at competitive runs stretching before the run.

Holy crap, I walk away for 10 mins, and there's 15 replies!

Well, I'm in pretty bad shape, I guess. Every so often I'll run a mile or so. The other night, I ran a mile and it almost killed me off. But, it was about -5 degress outside.

I'm going to the Gym after work.

Will age have any effect on it? I'm 15, and conditioning starts for golf in 19 days, and our coach is very comparable to Hitler.

I should mention that my degree is in exercise science. (Not trying to brag at all but hopefully makes me more credible.) There is no evidence it has a benefit. Every Doc and PT I worked with in college warned athletes never to stretch a cold muscle. They would jog for a bit and then stretch. I guess we will have to agree to disagree.

So why do you need to get in shape again?

Edit: Damn, Looney beat me too it.

Thats what I said. But, I guess all the older classmen have been talking it up, saying we're going to "take state."

And, our coach said that if we better "walk the walk"

I hate dumb highschoolers.

Did it ever occur to you that they could be bullsh!ting you? Hell I thought you were joining the military from your OP.

No. I know for a fact that they weren't messing with me. Our coach is one of those people who were "studs" in high-school, and are now 40 years old, and try to act like a hard-a$$
