I just built a new rig and I asked the question "dual or single core" many times. I got the x2 3800, 2gigs of ram, and a 7800 GT. Dual core is definitely worth it. I was playing world of warcraft, and I alt tabbed out so one of my addons could scan and catalogue the auction house (it takes abotu 20 min). While that was going on, I decided to see how BF2 would run. With the highest possible settings in BF2 I was getting about 60 FPS and absolutely no lag with world of warcraft running.

Once windows loads I can start playing games, browsing the internet, etc.. right away, I don't have to wait for any of my programs to load. Dual core is incredible, I haven't even tried to overclock it yet. I don't even notice when my virus scan is going. All I really do is game, but there is always some kind of program going on in the background. If you have $350 to spend on a CPU, get a dual core.

Welcome to 3 years ago, intel has had hyperthreading for a while and it does most of what you mentioned except running WOW and BF2 which I have yet to try.

I was just trying to help out all the people who, like I was, are not sure which is better for gaming. I just built my first rig, and I'm still a noob at it. You seem to read and post on this board a lot, so you probably see the multiple threads on this topic everyday. This was meant for the noobs like me, not the know it all elitists like yourself.

Duh ! The X2 is in a class way above a P4 with Hyperthreading. Way to thread crap !

hyperthreading is/was no where near as good or the performance of 2 cpu cores. hyperthreading, if can be said this way, performed roughly 110% while dual-core performs at 200%.

I'm in the same boat. I was debating on whether or not to get a X2 3800+ last month, but got a nice 3500+ venice instead. I think this will proabably tie me over until at least the 3800+ drops below the $300 mark (which at this pace, may be later this year *crosses fingers*)

probably shouldnt get a s939 dual core. by then, 939 will be dead.
 
Thanks for the advice, but the comment about hyperthreading is CORRECT!

Dual core will be the future, no doubt about it. But as of right now, very few applications take advantage of it. I can really compare my X2 4800+ to a P4 3.4GHZ with HT.

I first tried an FX-55 and I hated it. It is only good for sunning 1 thing at a time.
The X2 is a great choice if you want to multi-task and be future proof.
If you don't want to pay that much for a high end chip, go with a P4 with HT, you'll be happy, at this time I say X2 = HT

quite laughable!! have some benchmarks to prove that....I ran gaming tests with HT and it took quite a hit when running other apps with a game on...i thought it was still minor cause I had no lag but my percentage loss of fps made the gamers laugh at me....

HT cant hold sh^t compared to an X2...I know cause I am coming from one recently. HT did not schedule well and some apps took big hits...dual core is better cause I dont run into that anymore...
 
HT is a JOKE compared to the X2.. CMON people 😀

My other rig, that was my primary for over 2 years, is a Pentium 3.06 (ran it at about 3.2) with HT. HT is NOTHING compared to an X2.. NOTHING!!!

CMON folks.. HT is just a "virtual" processer 😀 Dual core isn't virtual- it's REAL.

There is just no comparison - at all.

In fact, my current work computer is a Pentium 3.6 with HT and is used for doing graphics and animation, and it simply doesn't hold a candle to my X2. In fact, it really isn't much of an upgrade over my old-school 3.06 that is 2 1/2 yrs old..

I can't believe there are people out there that think that virtual processers are as fast as real ones. 😕
 
I find it rather interesting that multi-processors were never mentioned in this at all, such as the Xeon. I'm running two Xeon 2.66 with HT, so windows reports four processors. Works good for me for gaming, and especially rendering...

I replaced my 3.4 with an X2 4800+ and some of the stuff I used to work with (video and winrar compression), takes just as long if not longer with the X2.

Probably cause you are not smart enough to set up your IO subsystem...the only way the 4800+ X2 doing those things takes the same time is...

1) video program is not multithreaded and you are archiving on the same drive you are doing your encoding...be smart OK...

I have done more HT testing tghen most so I now its strengths and weaknesses and you are making a silly comparison....

 
I have 3 300 GB Maxtor 16mb SATA with NCQ A8N-SLI Premium and 2 GB of RAM.

I am doing a "right now comparisson" not a later when most application will be actually using the dual core!
 
HT is fine, but it doesn't offer 90-100% additional performance like a second core does.

I'd say the average is in the 10-15% range with some (read: very few) rising above that somewhat.

The key to taking advantage of your X2 is finding SMP-aware software and multithreaded applications. WinRAR is hardly going to show the benefits of a dual core 😀

WInrar compresion any athlon 64 spank any P4 in winrar compresion (when running alone in the single core ones and when running other things in the X2, beside swinrar is not SMP aware) so it cannot be slower in any way!, and for the video encoding to be faster you have to use a multithreaded app where the X2 spanks any P4 with HT. There are bechmarks so don't come to us saying those ridicoluos things.
