What it is: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CrossOver_(software)

"CrossOver (a.k.a. CrossOver Office before version 6.0) is the collective name for two commercial and proprietary programs developed by CodeWeavers that allow many Windows-based applications to run on Linux and Mac OS X using a compatibility layer. The programs include CrossOver Mac and CrossOver Linux.

The programs are modified, proprietary versions of the public Wine source tree with various compatibility patches added, more user-friendly configuration tools, and commercial support. CodeWeavers employs several Wine developers and contributes code back to the free software/open-source software Wine project as per the GNU LGPL, although CrossOver is proprietary software."

On October 31, 2012, CodeWeavers will have a second software giveaway, this one entitled "Flock the Vote." CodeWeavers promised to have such a giveaway if 100,000 American voters would promise to vote on election day, in a nonpartisan bid to encourage activism. 100,000 people have pledged, so CodeWeavers will allow any person in the world to download and register a copy of CrossOver Linux or CrossOver Mac; the offer includes a year of support.

I'm undecided if this is something I want. I'm not a fan of trialware, and am ambivalent about running Windows software on my system. Decisions, decisions...

why do you think this is trialware? as far as i can tell, it's the full version. only the support is limited to 12 months.

Serious question; What happens on reinstall? Stuff like this from the Windows world works for the initial install, but that's it. If something happens to your setup, you lose your license. I realize that can be hacked around, but over the years, I've lost the desire to play games with software. I'll take what's freely given, but don't want the hassle of gaming the system.

okay, at least i now understand why you call this trialware. i don't know what happens with reinstall. but, i have re-installed windows-based software on windows and have not lost licenses. maybe i've been lucky.

Depends on the exact terms. In my experience, premium giveaways tend to have more restrictions than more pedestrian software. I'd consider CrossOver a premium package, which is why I had concerns. I might have been way off base. I'm sure they specified the terms somewhere, but it's too late now anyway. If I need to use Windows software, configuring Wine would be a suitable penance for angering the RMS :^D

Well I downloaded CrossOver and realized I have no Windows software to install on it. If I recall correctly I pitched my last piece of Windows ware 7 or 8 years ago.
