get away from tax when trading late model for new?

if I have a newer car, say 2003, and I want to get a new car again, is there a way to get away from paying tax out the ass again? Either trade or sale. My last car had like 2K in tax so I don't want to pay another 2-4K in tax another year or so later on another car. I am in CA.

sales tax? can't be avoided unless you can get the dealer to include it in the cost of the car instead.
