On a lark, I entered an E-Value code from last month's PC Magazine at Dell's web site and the link showed an unexpected $100 discount selection in the configurator and a "promo" discount on the extended 3-year on-site warranty ($40 discount). The offer was good even when using the MS Passport 20% off deal (I checked with a CSR before ordering). This deal works on the L Series 600Mhz Celeron, the L Series 800Mhz PIII, and the 866Mhz 4100 Series, and might work on notebooks as well (I didn't check).

Here are the respective e-codes as published in the Dell ad in PC Mag:

Dell Dimension L Celeron - EValue Code: 04404-591006
Dell Dimension L PIII - EValue Code: 04404-591008
Dell Dimension 4100 PIII - EValue Code: 04404-591011

Enjoy!

The terms and conditions say you have to get to the Dell site via a link from the passport site. If you do this rather than going in through Dell.com, you don't get the chance to enter an EValue code - it displays a completely different one - presumeably linked to the Passport deal.

You still see the msg in red at the side of the page but it might be enough for MSN to wriggle out of the 20%...

Is there a way to enter a code after going from the MSN site ?

Regards.

Enter through the MSN Passport link, then click on the dell.com link in the upper left corner of the page. It takes you to the home page. Click on any of the links listed under "Online Shopping and Services" (e.g., "Home & Home Office", "Small Business Center", etc.) and when the page displays, enter the E-Value code in the space provided in the column on the left side of the page (under the Dell 800 number). When you go to the detail view, the standard MSN 20% discount red text still appears as usual, so the same terms and conditions apply.

YMMV but I'm annoyed by Dell's online shopping experience. If you go for the Dimension 4100 EVALUE code that peeps posted, you're forced to buy Office 2000 (it's not cheap). Also, you are not eligible for the free DVD-ROM upgrade.

If you go through the standard route via MSN, you're forced to get speakers & either a modem or a net card. Dell is way overcharging for their modems, so I would suggest the $40 3Com net card as a better option.

Finally, as I repriced the system, the DVD-ROM drives disappeared. So at this point in time, neither of the two deals is superior. If it wasn't for the 20% rebate, I'd say this particular model is overpriced.

Page with link to Dell

Again, please don't mind how Dell is listed under 20% Gift Certificate, we wouldn't want another extended thread about that.
P.S. Yes, you get 20% cash back in the form of a check

A 20% cash rebate will be issued to qualified Dell Home Systems purchasers based on total transaction amount, including taxes and shipping. Offer good only for online system purchases made through Dell Home Systems. When you enter the coupon code, it brings you to the small business center. Which annull the 20% of cash back for Dell Home Systems!
