I would stay away from the epson printers.. I currently have a 640 stylus and it is the biggest POS printer.. It is noisy as hell, its slow!, and print quality sux.. so basically you get what you pay for.. but I guess if you need it just for printing documents.. *cough* its a good deal  I dont mean to rip on your post but Im just trying to warn people about Epson.

I own an Epson 740 and my brother owns a 640. These are both three years old and still output excellent photo quality prints. It is a little noisy, in that every day or so, it goes through a whole little cleaning routine before printing the first page. This is kind of annoying, mainly for the pause before it starts printing. Fortunately it only does this once every couple of days.

There are plenty of POS printers out there. The 640, 740 or 580 are not this type of printer. They are good little printers, with readily available compatible ink cartridges for very cheap.

I've purchased two Stylus 660's and one 440. These are excellent printers for the money and I regulary print photo-quality prints on the 660's using $4 replacement ink cartridges. Don't worry about the quality of this product.

kendogg: I own several Epson models, from the 740s up to the 3000 series. I have to say that they are the most reliable and cost effective printers out there. These printers consistently give high-quality prints, and are worth every penny.

Since generic inks have hit the market, I've used them on all my printers except for the 3000 because I need the highest quality on that printer. No problems whatsoever.

I've printed on almost every media that Epson sells except for the backlit and canvas stuff. Card stock, photo-quality paper, glossy film, regular paper -- they all work flawlessly.

I'm sorry that you haven't shared the same experience that I have with Epson. I think you will find, however, that the majority of Epson owners out there are more than happy with their printer.

EPSON RULES!!! :D :D

I own a 640 and also this 580 (picked it up a few weeks ago for under $50 shipped :) ) Anyway, I will agree that the 640 is a POS but the 580 is a better printer, a lot quieter, faster, better quality. Its not the best thing on the planet like duh, but I think its worth the money...

I own 2 of the cheapest of Epson printers, the model 440. Have been using them for my gf and my computers for 2-3 years and I'd like to say that they are one of the best printers that I've had. The only downside is probably the software that manages the ink. If you change ink before it finishes, it will not recognize the new size of the ink. Other than that, they are pretty good for their price. I've also used generic ink that cost like 5 bucks without any problems.
