Get a Venice or wait for the X2 to come out

I've got a 3000+ Winnie that OCs to 2300 rock solid but the Venices with their high OC performance is really tempting me. Problem is I do a lot of video encoding and the X2 seems to have a big edge in that department. Of course, the price of the X2 is gonna be over $500 and thats a problem. What should I do?

Well if you can't afford it, then you can't obviously buy it. You'll probably have to wait for the first major price cut to jump on the X2's. I'm scraping all the money I can to get one though...if you can do the same, I would say go for the X2 as well 😉

Wait d00d.

You won't get anymore than maybe 2.7 or 2.8 if you're lucky out of a Venice.

Wait for X2 😀

I was dumb & sidegraded from my s754 3200+ NewCastle to a s939 3200+ Venice, & now i'll likely be spending more money when the X2s become available for cheaper.

I say wait, at least a few months..

Your 64@ 2300 should hold you over for a bit.. But then again, a venice @ 2.6-2.8 would be nice as well..

X2's will be pricey for a bit..

n7 you should have probably stayed with your newcastle.. But you never know on the overclock as well! (Venice)

😛

You could have gotten 2.9ghz..

You Buy an X2 you will have no regrets for at least two years. It's that kinda chip. Groundbreaking.

Like the northwoods were but even more so. Unmatched when they first came out and still strong today in the right hands.

X2 will be my last CPU until quad cores.. I have 754 NC, 939 Winny, skipped Venice

well you'll see soon enough when I bench @ 2.8-3.0 for y'all.. 😀

I had the stupid K8V SE Deluxe mobo with that NC.
No AGP locks, so rather than going for another mobo with a CPU that likely wouldn't go very high, i figured i'd go the safe route.

Zebo is right on. This is the first chip to offer this kind of performance jump in a current generation of other hardware (motherboard/memory stay the same and you just buy a CPU). I am still using a Northwood because of the great chip it has proven to be. I only came out of hiding to buy a Venice in preparation for the X2. I NEED it. I will have it. It is only a matter of time and $$. If I have a windfall, expect the X2 in my rig immediately. I would imagine that an X2 system is about as future-proof as anything you can buy this year could get.

ya wait... the venice is nothing special if you already have something similar. most people are hitting 2.6ghz max... i bet amd intentionally picked the good ones to go for reveiew and that is why everyone is talking about them... I fell for it but it was still worth it because i came from an a-socket 🙂

Making the switch to the 939 isn't all bad N7. This way you can afford to hold out for a while till hopefully the prices come down pretty good on the X2's and the Venice SHOULD hold its relative resale for some time. Look at the Newcastle 3000+...they have been 150...for about forever.

1. Laws NEVER Die !!
2. Benchmarks arte WORTHLESS.... I can make thew results whatever I want. If all you do with your rig is run BM's ALL DAY SURE GO FOR IT
3. Dually AMD's are Sweet but high $
4. Dually Intel's are EL Cheapo.

If 'somebody' developed a special BIOS for the AMD Dually that allowed some flavor of Linux in One Side,
handling all the Special Devices that Winblows can't, the 'hyper-BIOS' could determine that a 'special Device', could be attached to the Windows core by making the special look like something supported by WIN.

Assuming that X2's will come out "really soon now" and not in two or three months, then it will only be a matter of weeks (or however long it is until they're available plus shipping time) until I have one. 😛

My only concern is BIOS flashing; I'll need to put an X2 straight into a previously-unbooted motherboard - will it work?

There are some reports of X2's working without a BIOS flash.. Most likely you will need to flash..

Well that sucks. Will I end up having to get a cheap A64 to put in first just to flash the BIOS, and then ending up with a useless chip sitting around with nothing to do? Definitely, more information is needed on this. 🙁

bjc112, you have a platty as do i, and im sure your going to be buying one of these X2's, do you know whether it will be a plug and play style with the X2 and this board or will a BIOS flash be required??

Thanks

I was going to order from Monarch anyway, so I guess this is what I'll do. Thanks. 🙂

I know with Asus's mobos, you can start-up a bios update program(ezFlash) upon bios boot-up and flash your mobo then.

Which doesn't help if part of not recognizing the X2 involves refusing to boot at all. (so does anybody know exactly what will happen when a board that requires a BIOS update encounters an X2 for the first time?)

Switching isn't bad at all, i agree 😀
I am very happy with my Venice @ 2600 MHz vs. my former system.

For him to buy a Venice & maybe get 300 Mhz more than his Winnie makes no sense to me though when X2s would truely provide an upgrade.
