Get a GTX 980 now or wait for AIB 1060/RX 480's?

Looking to replace an aging EVG GTX 670 FTW signature 2 card with what was originally a $200 GPU budget card, but some how I talked my self to $250 and realized I'll be spending over $300 for a decent AIB unit. I mainly play Overwatch and blizzard games (Wow and SC2). Right now I know I'll be waiting atleast 1-2 months until prices settle and we see more AIB units of both the GTX 1060 and RX 480's. I'm not sure I want to wait that long and GTX 980's are starting to drop.

I am really eyeing this:

MSI GeForce GTX 980 4GD5T OC - $315 with $30 MIR.

Thoughts ?

Don't get a 980 now. I'd avoid last gen anything in your price range. Wait to see reviews of custom AIB RX 480 8GB and custom AIB 1060 6GB and decide from there

1060 won't be $250 for awhile. If it was me I'd wait a few weeks to see how things play out and grab the best aftermarket card in your price range. Don't buy a last gen Nvidia card they routinely abandoned old architectures on the driver level.

buying a 980 is akin to throwing your money away atm. wait for 1060 reviews and compare it to 480. buy what you want or preferred. just make sure you don't buy the fools' edition. you are better off putting the extra 50$ in a charity box.

or you could go for 980 ti AIB used 😛 they can be had for 300$ easily now. good hunting.

If you NEED a new card now at or below $300...a 480 or used 970 would be your best bet.

You can get a used 970 for <$200 or an equivalent 290/390 as well to tide you over.

Le sigh this is what prolly I'll end up doing. I don't have a huge trust in the used market. My GTX 670 is practically running on par or better than a GTX 960, I guess another 1-2 month wouldn't hurt. I just really wanna enjoy overwatch like my brother at 144hz on epic!

I'd tell you to grab an RX480 and sell it later or hand it down to a family member but they are sold out nearly everywhere I check.

Just wait for decent 1060's and 480's.

If you play overwatch, sc2 and wow your 670 is probably holding up just fine, so why hurry.

we all agree that 980 is a waste of money right now and in comes someone recommending a used 970 😵😱D:

If you can wait a few weeks you'll almost assuredly have 480s in stock. My guess is that there won't be a vast difference between the 480 and the 1060 and the 480 will be doubly cheaper -lower MSRP and even lower street price.

Plus, dx12 games will be disproportionately better on the 480 meaning it'll hold value a little longer.

That being said, a 1060 will likely be a good value. It's just that if you do buy a 480 (perhaps because the 1060 isn't in stock) i see no reason you'll regret the decision.

Don't you dare give my wife a reason for me not to spend money! Plus I'm getting an Asus 144hz gaming monitor that will need extra FPS.

Do NOT get a 980 for 300 now. Do anything besides that, a 480, used 970/390 etc. Heck I don't think I'd buy a 980 for 275, or 250 right now.

Ideally just wait a month or two for the 1060.

Many people like it , perhaps you're alone.

Saying some item is "sick" in American slang means that it's awesome/rad/great/fantastic/etc.

People or animals are a different story. Don't you love English?

I have an alternative solution that WORKS!😎

Go to Talbots (nice ladies clothing store) and buy your wife a $200 gift card. Make sure they wrap it up. Tell her how much she means to you and that you wanted to give her this gift card to show her you care.

She will be so overwhelmed with joy that she will look the otherway when you order the first GTX 1070 that becomes available on Newegg.

A GTX 1080 might be pushing it! Or it might cost you another Talbot's gift card. 😀()🙂

It depends

You have to make some predictions like is the 1060 going to launch at MSRP and are you going to be able to get one?

They are launching as fast as they can to take sales from the 480.

Once the 1060 launches I think you will see more 980 sales.

The next question will be if the new 10xx features are worth waiting for to you.

I think you are wasting a little bit of money if you get the 980 but I don't think it is as bad as some try to make it sound. You can get your card a minimum of 12 days sooner and possible much more, unless you are going to use VR, you really aren't missing out on many features I can think of.

If you want the 980 and you are willing to pay the price premium over the 1060 for 2 - 4 weeks earlier then do it.

To me, the value of a 980 is 90% of whatever a 480 is going for and no higher.

If someone had a 980 and wanted to sell it to buy a 1080 I'd be tempted to offer $200-220.
