Question Get a Graphics Card Or Monitor Now?

Hey there I’m looking for some advice. I’m interested in getting the ASUS ROG strix RTX 2080 Super. But I’m not sure if I should buy it now or buy a new Monitor( The Razer Raptor 27), and then wait for the new RTX 3000 Series that should be coming out at the end of the year.(I know they may not be the best of their kind, but I’m set on getting them). Just wondering if I should buy the card Now then buy the monitor at the end of the year, or buy the monitor now and wait for the 3000 series.

Current CPU: I7-9700K
Current GPU: GTX 1060 6GB

Current monitor: some old dell monitor that is 1080P, 60Hz, 24Inch.


Wanted GPU: ASUS ROG Strix RTX 2080 Super Advanced Overclocked

Wanted Monitor: Razer Raptor 27, 1440P, 144Hz, 27Inch.

Just looking for suggestions. Thanks

Yea you'll want to get that new display to really appreciate the power of a new GPU.

Either gpu later, monitor later if you want to wait for RDNA2/Ampere, or gpu now, monitor now if you don't. Doesn't make sense to buy one without the other.

I kind of agree with @SteveGrabowski . That said, if buying today, I might hold out, and wait until both monitor, and especially card, supported HDMI 2.1. That should provide the bandwidth for 4K @ 120 / 144Hz, and 8K60.

I've been using a couple of 40" 4K UHD displays for desktop, YouTube, etc., the last 3 years, I think it's great! 4:4:4 Chroma sub-sampling, on my RX 5700 works @ 4K60 too. Even VSR @ 5K!

If you're only getting one now, it should be the monitor. A crappy 1080p60 screen wouldn't let you enjoy as much of what a more powerful GPU can offer, while a larger and better screen will have a significant impact even before upgrading the GPU. But make sure the monitor really has all the features you're going to want, since it's likely to last you through multiple future GPUs.

I would definitely wait till next gen on the GPU. For the monitor, either buying now or later is fine.

Really depends on the games you want to play. I am very patient with my gaming and play through a decent number of Xbox360/PS3 era titles on my signature PC, and really haven't even touched anything more recent than 2014-2015. Went with the 1440p/144hz monitor now since I was already gaming with SSAA on basically everything to make use of the extra GPU headroom. By the time I get into more recent titles that will require more GPU oomph, I will have likely picked up a 2080 S/Ti used with plenty to gas in the tank to drive that res and frame rate.

Long story short: If you like playing up to date graphics intensive stuff and your 1060 is asking you to sacrifice a lot of settings for playable framerates... go with the GPU. If not, go with the monitor.

Of course, if there is the option to get both or wait and get both, do that... but that's not the question being asked here.
