Damn bums, where's the metaphorical carpet to sweep them under when you need it.

The problem isn't that every homeless person doesn't want to work...it's that you need a residence or home in order to even get a friggin job!!!

wrong, there are plenty of companies that pay "under the table". How many illegals work in home construction? Many. How many bums work in hime construction? None. Both are not checked for residency.

Another example - A company I worked for 10 years ago was having a building constructed. The construction manager would walk across the street to a homeless shelter and offer some of the bums $7-8/hour just to sweep the dust and dirt from the construction. He never had one bum accept his offer.
What put it into perspective for me was that Alabama is full of illegal mexicans working and providing for themselves, and they don't have SSNs or anything. Then I came upon a guy with a sign by an off-ramp asking for money. If these mexicans who can't speak english well and are not here legally can find a job, why the hell can't he? You won't believe how many people roll down their windows and give a $1 bill too.

A few years ago I was outside of Walmart in the gardening section, and I saw this guy on the corner with a sign like that. His sign also said something about getting a ride. Eventually someone picked him up, he grabbed his backpack and sign and away he went. About twenty minutes later someone else dropped him off back at that same corner. This time he had some cigarettes to smoke. My wife and I just looked at each other - "that was weird, he didn't get too far".

Not really sure what he was up to but his sign was a lie.

think about it, would you starve and freeze on the streets with no friends you can trust, just so you didn't have to have a job? no? that's because YOU'RE SANE. The homeless and ex-homeless people I've talked to (and I mean more than just "no change today") were all either mentally ill, hopelessly addicted to hard drugs, or both. They had no one to help them with the problems that led to them being homeless in the first place. But statisically, the single fastest group of people who are becoming homeless are families.
I wonder what percentage of "bums" are from this lot?

I can't help but think back to the numbers I've read about how much bums can make on rainy days - in excess of $100 tax free. Then you've got the story of the guy who used to drive to work in a cadillac and dress down for his begging for the day (read in a paper). A lot of these homeless people are not homeless, and they make more than somebody working at mcdonalds as well.

Probably a lie; most of these people will lie their faces off for money.

Its certainly possible. I still felt bad though.

I sincerely doubt that ALL know that song by Everlast.

I wish I didn't know that song. It sucks.

I think we should build a town somewhere in the middle of nowhere, Bumville (actually we could call it "Opportunity"). The whole town would be an apartment/hotel complex. There would be cafeterias where everyone could eat for free three times a day. Water and electric would be free. There would be a few factories where they could sign up to work to make some cash, which went directly to a savings account. They wouldn't get it until it reached a certain amount, then to get it they had to leave Opportunity.

Bums would be picked up and sent to this place.

Saying "Reagan kicked them to the curb" is rather simplistic and misleading.

Involuntary commitment rules were changed mainly by civil rights groups representing those who were committed against their will, but were not deemed a danger to themselves and others.

Hell, that almost sounds like the state pen except they can only leave when their sentence is up. :D

This is why if you want to REALLY help the homeless, you'll never give them money directly, but give money to charitable organizations who house, feed, cloth and help them find jobs. Nine times out of ten when you give a bum money, it will go to one addiction or another. It will NOT serve to stop their suffering... but only prolong it.

In other words, people who give bums money directly are as responsible for the bum bumming as the bum is. (And yes, I was sober when I wrote that. :p)

My friend always thought fighting a bum would be bad cuz they have nothing to lose.

When I first saw bums, I felt sorry for them. One day, my dad and I were going somewhere. We saw a man w/ a sign that said "hungry. Will work for food." He looked like he could use a meal, so we went to Burger King and got the man 3 whoppers. When my dad pulled up to hand him the bag, he said "I don't want this." He asked for money. That was the last time I ever thought about helping one of those leeches.

There's a rather well-dressed (for a bum) guy who stands outside the downtown coffee shop near my university. Big guy, overweight. Stands on his own two legs for hours shaking an empty coffee cup at people asking for change.

Seems pretty weird doesn't it? An overweight male who can stay standing all day, yet he's begging? I didn't ask him for his life story - I have to pass by the guy a few times a week and don't feel like looking for trouble.

Most local shelters can act as a residence address

Ya, for sure, cuz everyone knows that bums don't need to eat so they will not accept food.

When I was living in S Fla, there were plentry of people on the highway interchange ramps asking for "food".

I used to keep a couple of cans of tuna with me. When I offered the cans, no one seemed to want them. I thought that tuna qualified as food.

Nah they could leave at any time regardless of how much money they had in savings, they just wouldn't be able to take the savings until it reached a point. Would be a good incentive. But if they were caught bumming again and had to be sent back, I suppose they'd be on probation and couldn't leave.

Happened to me before. Our team was in Philly for an office network overhaul. We were just leaving Fridays when a bum asked for food. One of our guys had his dinner to go - steak and lobster, not even touched because he had to leave to troubleshoot something. He gave the bum the dinner, who looked at it, then asked for money with no interest in the food.
