Service costs that much no matter which way you slice it. If you own a Sidekick, you're *required* to buy the unlimited data since the device syncs to the Internet...that adds $20 to the monthly fee.

Agreed. Some people go into deals like this not knowing that over 5 years, it will cost them almost $4000! I think $20/month is outrageous -- Boost charges only 20cents/day for Internet access.

I agree... if you actually put the numbers to cell phone charges to paper over the long haul most people don't realize how much this stuff costs!

I don't see paying $70/month for cellphone + mobile Internet worth it for me. I can use coupons and go to nice restaurants once a week more for that $70.

I use cable internet and TV probably 200+hours/month so it's $0.50/hour. I would use the Sidekick maybe 10-20 hours a month for a cost/hour $3.50-$7.00. Not worth it to me.

Well, you're not comparing apples to apples.

You're figuring the Sidekick cost at $70.00 and only analyzing the mobile internet usage. You're forgetting that only about $22 of the total cost of the Sidekick is data. The rest is cellphone cost, and you are presumably paying that elsewhere at similar rates.

Even with your estimates of 10-20 hours a month, the cost is now about $1.00 to $2.00 per hour of usage, which compares much more favorably with your cable internet/TV rate.

It's not really fair to compare a fully mobile solution like this to landline-based cable internet anyway.
 
definitely good deal for the time being.

don't forget that you could be on the internet all the time, unlike the other cell phones. You could browse actual website, not just the mini version. AIM is actual real-time conversation, not another form of text messaging. I'd say my friend who has one is on it 5-6 hours a day, when he works, watching TV, eating, etc.

If you spend a lot of time on AIM, it's a great device.

What's your point? With Amazon, you make $75 and at the local store, you pay sales tax on the full price.
 
Anyone know this - I already have a perfectly good but unused TMobile phone. Could I get one of these sidekicks (with the extra $20/month internet fee), put the sim card in my old phone, sell the sidekick on ebay, and call TMo to get the fee removed since I'm not using it?
 
what's the point of paying an extra 20 bucks for internet access when people already pay 50 bucks for cable internet? Internet on my phone would be cool, but I'm not that attached to the Internet that I need to pay 20 bucks extra.
 
I don't think anyone understands how awesome it is to have a sidekick... you think that $20 is expensive but after you get one you can not do without it. I use it all the time, even at home where I have cable internet. Its easier for me to just IM someone while watching TV on the couch from my phone than to get up and sit at my computer. Everyday I use the browser to get traffic maps so I know if to take i90 or 520 from my phone. Not to mention the # of times its saved me since I have all my e-mail with me all the time I can get directions/addresses that I forget to print out and such. I dunno about now but I get unlimited text messages with the $20 too. And if you get the developer SDK you can download apps that are really useful. I use the dictionary when I'm reading and I check the automatically updated weather reports off my phone before I get dressed so I know what to dress for.

The best thing is just filling in spare time, there's always something to do with the sidekick when you're waiting for something. Punch out an e-mail, IM friends, surf the net or play games.

However the bad thing is that I'm so attached to the device that I probably will have to use a sidekick for the rest of my life...!
 
I understand how awesome it is for a sidekick.

Tmobile doesn't understand that I have no use for the $40/mo plan and the rebate does not apply 🙁
