Thanks for the input..
So basically it's the cell user that pays, and pays, and pays....:(

AT&T charges to send text messages but any message you receive is free.. you can also send a text message to any at&t member by sending an email to theirphon#@att.com or something like that (it's listed on their site).. I find that's much easier if anyone wants to send me a message...

yup. it's amazing that i've put up with this company for 3 years. compared to t-mobile: 500 sms--cingular $9.99 vs. tmobile $2.99. incoming sms: cingular $0.10 vs. tmobile $0.05, AFTER using up 50 free included incoming with plan. outgoing sms: $0.10 vs. $0.05...

plus cingular's gprs rates are horrendous.

why don't i switch to tmobile? i've managed to rake some discounts and i've also been off contract for 2 years. don't feel like being tied up for now. i'll give cingular the advantage minutes-wise, but even then, their customer service is subpar and it isn't open 24-7 like tmobile's... if i was buying a vacuum cleaner then i could understand CS not being open 24-7, but this is a cell phone--people depend on them around the clock, especially these days.

end of ramble.

Thats weak. In the UK where digital GSM networks have been in place for years we only pay to send.

Whoa. So what happens if someone just keeps sending you SMS all day every day? Do they make you pay for it?

Also. I use AIM for sms...I think I remember AIM 4.7 and 5.1 supporting it. Just add the phone number to your buddy list. If the phone number is 14155554444 then you'd add it to your list as "+14155554444" and you're set. Just IM the buddy and they'll get a message from you. Free. :)

SMS calendar reminders, news updates customized to just about anything you can imagine (the military news is nice to have these days!) and interface to mesaging services AND hotmail.

Really like the link with MSN instant messaging. It's akward but it's great to be able to chat back and forth between computers and the phone. Great way to kill time. Would be impossible without T9 though.

Hotmail is a little ackward given the 160 character limit of SMS. BUT you can use it to get a list (via SMS) of what's in your "IN" box and then choose what hotmail messages you want to send to yourself (the message will be broken up in 160 character chunks).

could be using somebody's old number... i had that happen when a lady kept calling and calling asking for her relative, but i told her there was nobody by that name. haven't gotten a call from them in 3 months thought. kinda miss her.

kidding.

and yes, if ppl keep sending you sms, you pay. the only solution is to disable sms altogether (with cingular anyway).

Totally agree! Having the weather forecast and daily news on your phone at 7:15 am is very convinient! And if I'm not awake by that time, my phone will beep at me as a reminder that it's time for me to get up :)

That's only with cingular right? No other carriers make you pay for the messages you received right?

New plans have unlimited in and out, call and see if they will give it to as a long time loyal customer.....

mobile.yahoo.com has lots of free SMS services. You can get stock quotes, weather, news, Yahoo email (using a filter), and chat using Yahoo Messenger. The times and frequency of alerts are extremely customizable.

Edit:
Oops, forgot to include the important part: you can send unlimited SMS to anyone (cost to receiving party depends on their plan obviously).

Sounds like you're either stalking the person or something. Hehehehe. Anyhow, you can find out what carrier your "target" has.

Here

Just enter in the digits required and the database will attempt to spit back what the carrier is. From there, it's up to you to use your brains to match what carrier he/she is using. :)

getting SMS reminders is interesting.

however, if you want to send regular text messages to people, you can usually do it from the carrier's website for free:

AT&T Wireless Text Messaging

T-Mobile Text Messaging
Is there a way to tell which service your target has?

SMS use in the US is a joke compared to overseas.
This Article exlpains how big text messaging / email is over in Tokyo. (Its a pretty good read but a bit long.)

I think you will continue to see the mobile service providers push text messaging here in the US as we catch up. Hopefully that will result in reduced cost or even better no cost at all for the the messaging services.
