I'm supporting speech period, attaching the word "hate" to it is just a way for you to justify censoring an opinion you disagree with. One man's hate speech is another's protest is another's humor.

why don't you go into any major store and scream FIRE.

let me know how that free speech goes.

you are no different than uglycasanova, absolutely unable to take history and context into account.

i still haven't voiced an opinion on the subject yet you have assigned one to me.

Nope you assigned it when you told someone to STFU in a discussion about free speech. Yet you fail to see this is amazing.

Explain it to us because I think we are seeing the parallels with Nazi Germany and its thought police and are able to see the dangers from letting the government dictate what can and can't be said and arresting those that resisted. Maybe you have better insight into it though?

There's no paradox. Censorship inhibits growth because people aren't free to discuss the issues, the government is free to (try to) keep the status quo if it chooses. Letting a group of people decide the narrative and what is or isn't acceptable to think should be a nightmare to a board as supposedly progressive as this one, crazy that some even remotely try and defend it.

It also pushes discussion underground, and the lack of public discourse let's the extremes of society to provide the explanation for things that people want to know about but don't understand, because it can't be discussed by free thinkers or openly debated in society. This fuels the rise of bigotry and eliminates any nuanced understanding in the topic. Authoritarian thought police policies ultimately aren't helping the people or groups it thinks it's helping, it really just makes the issue worse.

Yes? Are you aware the Nazi's suppressed opposition speech which helped them gain power? After the war ended have you ever heard of the Stasi?

It's so bizarre to be arguing with someone who is anti free speech. o_O

so you don't believe hate speech creates an imminent public danger?

It would need to be imminent and specific. Broadly casting the net to say certain speech is dangerous "just because" doesn't cut it. Talk of integration and civil rights used to be considered dangerous here in the states, thank god we didn't allow the government to put a stop to it (any more than they did).

the very reason that all Nazi symbols and paraphernalia have been illegal in Germany is because of Nazi hate, is it not?

have you just been cool with that for your entire life and only now you have a problem with restricted speech?

I don't follow you. I'm not ok with Nazi's if that is what you are implying?

The banning of Nazi symbols etc is to prevent it from being used to foment pro Nazi sympathies and lead to a resurgence in the party/movement, saying it is due to "hate" seems to be a juvenile way to view it. I disagree with the idea as well, not because I support anything Nazi related but I don't agree with the government outlawing ideas.

only by the idiot's who supported such hate and segregation, do you really want to continue supporting them?

I'm starting to think you're trolling.

My point was that our government used to think an idea was dangerous (integration and civil rights) but society through free speech was able to move forward and progress. You are arguing for giving the government the power to put up roadblocks to that progress.

I am not sure people preaching about killing the Jews muslims or gays are contributing to progress.

Then again there are many people here who think those same people should be able to spout that nonsense consequence free.

If you don't like what the Germans are doing in their country feel free to not visit and not buy products made their to show your displeasure. Maybe rally your friends to do the same.

This site censors things.

I'd rather see sites enforce their own policing of hate than the government imposing fines.

I guess we'll see how this goes. Looks like Germans voted for it, so we'll see if they change their collective minds or find any substantive change. My assumption is that hate will find its dark corners to hide and fester that will continue on unreported, as is how is usually goes.

The "hate speech" will almost assuredly not be as cut and dry as kill the Jews. It's a very slippery slope and who gets to decide where the line is? It's so bizarre people trust their governments enough to get to decide what is allowed to be thought. The whole idea is the farthest thing from being liberal/progressive.
