Speaking of cults fabricated on nonsense, they should extend the ban to Mormons.

But there are more Morons in the US government, than in the German government. Oh, morMons. Nevermind.

I have a big problem with this. A lot of people cheer Germany--the same types who take every chance to slander Scientology but don't hold other religions to the same judgment. Does no one see the obvious discrimination taking place?

Christianity gets so much of its respect from being around so damn long--it has become "tradition" in a sense in the same way many people believe in Judaism not with regard to a belief in higher being but to be an observing Jew is the more important component. Tradition somehow validates religion (understanding, given how humans operate). That and the size of the subscriber base.

Mormonism has been slandered a lot and even someone like Romney will face an uphill battle. Even still, Mormonism is growing in leaps and bounds which is surprising given how young it is. Give it enough time (say, another 500 years if staying the current course and millions to billions more followers) and Mormonism will have gained much in the way of legitimacy.

I find the fact that they deem Scientology a cult to be rather telling of how people view the legitimacy of religion in general. The same goes for comedians, internet posts on forums, bloggers and anyone else who takes every chance to bash Scientology over the more absurd religions and followings.

I see a sort of smug contempt (more than any towards other religions) that even non-believers (and atheists) have towards Scientology and see in them that even this perverse idea of tradition, age and size breeding legitimacy has infected even the non-believers as much as the believers. It is interesting.

(Disclaimer: I have an equal disdain for all religions)

Read this site and see if you still have equal disdain for all religions. (FYI, I am atheist so I don't have an agenda to promote another religion, I just think some are more harmful than others).

Oh I know what Scientology is about. I think it is pretty damn ridiculous too, but not nearly as bad as other (mainstream, even) religions if you stand back and look at them thoroughly.

I'd say Scientology is tame if only because it is so absurd. Mainstream religions just manage to get overlooked by virtue of being part of "tradition". Pick and choose is the order of the day. Once again the "tradition" gets in the way of what people want to believe about their religion and what the religion actually promotes. They use morals to dictate their religion when it should be just the opposite.

If we were to measure religious beliefs by the absurdity and downright "evilness" of their doctrines then I think there are far more suggestive and mainstream ones that fit the bill before Scientology IF that is your measure.

While flat out "nutty", Scientology is less threatening in that sense.

(I still have an equal disdain for all religions regardless, though.)

Intolerance for a particular group in Germany... hmmm, what happened last time...

Intolerance and hatred is in abundance in Germany, and it does not stop at Scientologists.

While I can definitely understand your point, and agree with it to a point, you really need to look more into scientology before comparing it with other religions. (how bizarre the myths may be aside, the money making side of scientology is where I start to grow tired of it)

I did a Google convention recently in Berlin and talked to the Google guys and said, 'Where is this coming from?' I said, 'What's the No. 1 country?' I thought it was Germany. It's Ireland ? go figure. Germany was No. 3."

Rofl, we love The Hoff more than Germany? Haha, I haven't been keeping my finger on the pulse of the country I see!

Actually, I've heard that there are lots of Mormons in the FBI. Can anyone chime in on that?

Admit it...you're the one hiding Tom Cruise in the closet 😉[/quote]

Sometimes I think Cruise is still in the closet...

Don't persecute Cruise
Tom Cruise might be strange and even annoying, but as much as anyone else he has the right not to be discriminated against on account of his religion.

The Germans aren't so sure. Mr. Cruise, like several other actors, is a member of the Church of Scientology, a sect of which the German government is highly suspicious. The Germans apparently feel that it has totalitarian tendencies, and so they are preventing Mr. Cruise from filming a movie in or around the country's military sites.

Scientology seems bizarre to outsiders, but then again so does Mormonism, Evangelical Christianity and Hasidic Judaism. Blacklisting Mr. Cruise solely on the basis of his church affiliation is unfair.

Old thread but Germany means business with Scientology... Like islamistic organisations and parties of the extreme right, Scientology is under surveilance of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution. Most Germans think of Scientology as an totalitarian (=anti-democratic, hence the surveilance) money machine, a sect with brainwash camps. And they're probably right.

Here's a photo of a well-placed German brochure about Scientology...

Because the leadership of every other religions believes in the religion. Scientology knows it's a commercial enterprise and a cult, but convinces its followers otherwise.
