Georgia wants to close 7 of 9 polling stations in majority black county

In a county that is 60% black and almost 30 percent of the entire population at or below the poverty line, Georgia is proposing closing most of the polling locations for November. The reason? They don’t comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act. One location serviced a community that was 96.7% black.

The absurdity of this proposal has not escaped the ACLU who is threatening legal action should the proposal proceed. The locations have been used for decades and the county has done nothing to make them compliant. Nor have they proposed any steps to simply make them compliant. Instead, the proposal would mean extreme difficulty for many of the poorer residents being able to make it to the polls.

It’s speculated that part of the reasoning behind the move is Georgia will have its first female black candidate for governor on the ballot for a major party and this move would suppress much of the black vote in this county of about 7700 people. The polling places were good enough for both the primaries and runoff elections earlier this year.

I wish that this surprises me.
maga/mawa

We need the lawyers to come down hard on these people
It wouldn't be anymore blatant had they stuck up a sign like was done in Tennessee in 2016.

So this is what the Repub Party has become. Who could'a known? Can't imagine what it will look like after the midterms. That the party will make their damned best effort to get Trump the Pathological Liar in Chief re-elected in 2020 says everything anyone ever wanted to know about how low, how broken, how pathetically insane, how corrupt and how desperate the party has degenerated into.

The sickness runs deep in the party. It needs a thorough cleansing, a rebirth of a sort where a guy as selfish, as heartless and as incompetent as Trump will never ever get to sit in the White House ever again.

edit - If the Repubs in Georgia do pass this blatant form of voter repression, I'm wondering if a Supreme Court loaded with those activist bought and paid for conservative judges will have enough principle and adherence to the Constitution and BOR to toss this nonsense out the window and somehow penalize those crooks in Georgia for the malfeasance they're committing.

Race issues aside, the local government responsible for this complete and utter failure to provide adequate service should be forced to step down and not be allowed to stand in the next election.

The racial discrimination is bad enough, but what's scary is just the modern Republican mindset toward elections.

They genuinely want one-party rule. They genuinely see the will of the people as a threat. And they're willing to disenfranchise entire cultural groups if it means holding office for a few more years.

Brian Kemp is a scumbag and representative of the modern day GOP.

The "Consultant" that recommended the closure is Mike Malone.
https://slate.com/news-and-politics...ds-on-erasing-the-black-vote-its-working.html

Mike Malone is an associate of Brian Kemp. He is also a scumbag.

Why was Malone, an associate and backer of Kemp brought in as a consultant?
Malone was hired as a consultant earlier this year after a local supervisor abruptly quit. At Friday’s meeting, county official Scott Peavy said he called Kemp’s office - as secretary of state he oversees elections - and that one of his deputies suggested he hire Malone because he is certified to run elections.

Mike Malone is not the best person to have involved with elections -http://sos.ga.gov/admin/uploads/September_20,_2017_Transcript.pdf

The areas these stations serve are some of the poorest areas. It is a given that the local govnt would not have the dough to upgrade or make the location to meet the standard of ADA. If either party wants to promote a fair playing field, the more affluent parts of the county can step in and help their neighbors out?

The southern racists have always felt this way. The problem is they are now supported by a political USSC.

This is pathetic and should be condemned by other Republicans.

It will be but only AFTER the elections and then the condemnation will be towards some random democrat "because we found evidence that there was election tampering by Mexicans" (evidence meaning some guest on fox and Friends made a baseless accusation)

Why would people who are constantly kicked and mistreated wanted to stay in states like GA, AR, TN (deep red states) anyways? Why not move to a state that's not a total shithole?

I know that's what the racists want but why not just move to say Florida or Texas?

What's the thinking behind staying?

Maybe business could tell them to take that and shove it..

Free UBER and LYFT rides to anyone that had their polling place(s) closed to the nearest new place.

It's their home. In some cases (regarding black voters), they may have inherited that land from their great great grandparents, who got it from their grandparents who got it from being sharecroppers after being freed slaves.

The land that blues legend BB King was born and raised on goes back in his family almost 200 years.

Would you let someone run you off your land?

You're forgetting another salient point.....most of them can't afford to move. It's not like moving to another locale, state, etc., is free. When you're poor or close to it, moving isn't an option whatsoever.

Hmm...why did SCOTUS gut the Voting Rights Act again?? On what grounds??
Perhaps most egregiously, Kemp launched an investigation into Abrams’ efforts to register more minority voters despite no evidence of fraud. He used the probe to harass and intimidate voting rights advocates. Later, he refused to register 40,000 would-be voters who had signed up through the drive. Speaking to Republicans behind closed doors, Kemp explained the stakes: “Registering all these minority voters that are out there … if they can do that, they can win these elections.”
