Auto worker employee receives 91,500 pennies in final wages - BBC News

An auto repair shop in Georgia has been accused of delivering a final wage package to a departing employee by dumping a pile of oil-covered pennies on his driveway - 91,500 of them.

The pennies amounted to the $915 (£667) that Andreas Flaten said he was owed by A OK Walker Autoworks.
Mr Flaten said he faces having to wipe down each coin individually to get rid of the grease the pile was covered in.

A OK Walker Autoworks has not commented publicly on the incident.
But on its website, it says: "And yes we accept pennies as payment! They are cash you nitwits!"

I hope the next 50 customers to the repair shop pay them with pennies, the dirtier the better.

Honestly think its time we made quarters the smallest denomination.

They're heavier than pennies.. so if the boss wanted to be a dick he'd have to deal with the same weight.. just not 25 pennies for every quarter.. which seems excessively being a dick at this point.

There are certain people out in the world you know will have high attendance at their funeral just so everyone they pissed on can spit on their grave. That shop owner is one of those people, guaranteed.

He probably has some glass on his storefront. Time for the general public to wrap some bricks with "you deserve a brick today" and engage in repeatedly changing his insurance company for him.

I wonder if he included the appropriate pay stub detailing gross pay, taxes deducted, net pay, etc. Seems like it would be a requirement...and possibly a violation of state law if he didn't.

Employer is an asswipe. Former employee should sue former employer for the clean up of possible hazardous waste/substance left on his driveway from the pennies.

Depending on what the oily substance is...he should call out the state's hazmat clean-up crews...send the employer the bills.

Along the same lines, I'm wondering what sort of personal liability the employer has (as well as his operating LLC or corporation, if he has one) for civil liability for intentionally polluting the employee's property.

He should definitely lawyer up. A very likely outcome could be he ends up owning the business and firing his former boss who would still have a substantial personal liability-quite possibly nondischarageable in bankruptcy.

I'm sure he'd refuse to take payment that way. Hopefully he gets busted by the DEQ for improper disposal of used oil.
Was just going to say this, get the guy busted for creating an environmental disaster for dumping oil on his lawn.

Wanted to at least see what the other side of the story was:

The owner, Miles Walker, told a reporter from CBS46 he did not remember dumping the coins on Mr Flaten's drive but added: "He got paid - that's all that matters."

Mr Flaten said he was a manager at the auto repair firm, which is based in Peachtree City, south of Atlanta, until he quit last November in a disagreement over when he could leave work to pick up his child from day care.
Fuck that guy. Jesus Christ.

Let me guess, he didn't remember because he spent all morning kicking puppies and was tired? Or maybe he was in a rush because he was late to go punch orphans at the nunnery?

Bringing media attention onto himself by paying a worker in 90k pennies seems to have also brought the DOL's interest into the rest of the owner's practices. Seems he wasn't paying overtime for other workers, and now he's bought himself a federal lawsuit.

Being a huge enough asshole to get noticed by the feds and dragged into court is quite the accomplishment.
Business owners like that are who conservatives love. Entitled socialist employees wanting to be paid for overtime and being able to leave to get their kids from daycare sometimes need to pull themselves up by their bootstraps and that employer set them straight.

And see. The wealth trickled down, literally, onto the employees driveway as a stream of pennies. Proof it works perfectly.

Color me surprised that a boss that would be so petty is also mistreating employees and breaking the law.

Good grief what an asshole

"Unfortunately, by law, we cannot disclose his shortcomings. Let us just say that maybe he stole? Maybe he killed a dog? Maybe he killed a cat? Maybe he was lazy? Maybe he was a butcher? Maybe he liked self-gratifying himself in clients’ cars?" it said. "Whatever you want to think is your prerogative. But know that no one would go to the trouble we did to make a point without being motivated."

I would count them before leaving the premises, I believe in many states that would be considered hours worked.
If that isn’t true and the dude giving all those Pennie’s left I would count them and find “mis calculations” that equal about $150 of counting time.
