So wife and I are planning a one week and 4 days trip to Georgia and NC. Kid especailly wants to check out Duke, Emory and Georgia Tech, so might as well do it as a mini-vacation and college tour.

What are the weather like around Christmas? Are there snow? I c Accuweather said temps don't usually go below freezing but wonder how bad it would be if I drive from Austin to GA and then NC.

Any recommendation on places that are must see?

Oh, here are a few pics i took when we visited DC back in June.

It should be fine that time of year. Western NC will probably have some snow by then, but not so much where you are going. Georigia will only be warmer compared to anywhere in NC at that time.

December can range a lot in temps, it could be freakish warm or a random thunder storm or even "blizzard" of ~0.5" flakes over about 2 hours of apocalypse.

February is the really cold time in that area--late January through February. That's when the ice might show up, and it can suck.

By the way, did you get a chance to push anyone down the stairs?

It can vary greatly.

In the mountains, gonna probably be cold. In the Piedmont areas, it can be really cold if Canada lets it's freaky deaky cold out of their country, and it pushes too far down south. In some years I can still wear shorts and sandals well into December.

Don't forget the chance of that "super-slippery southern ice." MUCH slippery than any other type of ice...

Wife got scared after reading about ice and swing of temp, so probably we will settle for New Orleans, just take the kid to tour Tulane instead.

Nah, I didn't get the chance to push anyone down the stairs. People were all in groups of two or three, made it hard to sneak behinde and push.

again, only a possible issue if you are hanging out in the mountains, but even then it's more snow, and barely any. the western piedmont area is where all the ice hangs out, and several months after you'd be there.
