You know, when I was in Nam, there was this "group think" going on coming down right from the top military commanders in-theatre in whispers and sometimes even in outright ravings: "Republican presidents GOOD; Democrat presidents BAD....GOT IT?" And like the good soldiers we were, we agreed....no, we obeyed en masse. Yet, on an individual basis, we mostly didn't give a shit one way or another because we were too young to give a damn. All we cared about was going home to wife, kids, family and loved ones <---(more to this). However, when asked from others that were outside the "circle of trust" we'd flip on the "group think" switch and praise any Repub president and diss the Dem ones, just like we were told.
Noone wanted to be the only nail in the board that needed to be hammered down and out the other end of the board....with extreme prejudice. And when asked what we thought about being in Vietnam fighting against the communist hordes, we all to man shouted out on que "We wouldn't rather be anywhere else in the world. We're fighting for democracy and our folks back home and freedom and...blah blah blah"....just as we were told, and all the while we were fervently hoping to get pulled out before we got killed or maimed beyond usefullness. And yes, there were the chronics and the boozers...especially the drafted ones who spoke their minds and excersized their right to get busted in rank, isolated, blackballed and distrusted while the rest of us excersized our right to remain silent and compliant.
I saw the same thing in Desert Shield and Desert Storm before retiring out. I assume that hasn't changed, or has it?
