I suppose they pay out all the money the film makes to the actors/directors/executives so that there is no profit. tricky

This. Anyone who thinks they like the original trilogy and only hate the new ones, I'd recommend rewatching the old movies (or at least trying to) before making your decision. Last time I tried rewatching RotJ (about two years ago), I could barely get through it. Last time I truly enjoyed them was probably when I was still in high school.
?I get these occasional letters from Lucasfilm saying that we regret to inform you that as Return of the Jedi has never gone into profit, we?ve got nothing to send you.? [TimesOnline]

It doesn't mean that they were good at the time.
The fact is that because they took so long to make the last (or first depending on how you look at it) 3 really dated the old 3.
Had the most recent 3 not been made you probably still would have thought they were classic.

lol i'd love to see the accounting on that film
We have the backend accounting of LotR a few rooms over. When we originally received it from New Line, it was some 100+ banker boxes of documents.
lulz

No no no, they would still have horrible wooden acting, the most awful dialogue outside of public access soap operas, terrible overwrought music, a completely unoriginal plot, and be made with children's interests in mind which so totally dilutes the adult themes, that the overall sense of the films are corny at best. It's just like watching porn where no one gets naked, and all the fucking takes place off camera. All 6 films are abysmal failures.

I think it has more to do with growing up and realizing that the original trilogy were kids' movies.

That sucks. He certainly did a good job walking and pumping his fist every so often.
Actually he was given lines to read, but they sometimes gave him the wrong lines in order to prevent him from leaking juicy plot details to the press. The famous "I am your father!" line was originally read (by Prowse) as "Obi-Wan is your father."
Just because I take a dump at work, doesn't mean I should expect to get paid for it. Esentially the same thing.
Huh? No way, he was given specific lines to read and while I'm sure they didn't bother reshooting if only Prowse screwed up a line, I'm sure it was still an important part of the filming process to ensure proper reactions among the other actors, to get the timing down, and to create the necessary head and body movements so Vader wouldn't look like he was just standing perfectly still the whole time.

I wonder how they dealt with the "Obi-wan is your father" line when Luke's response in the movie is "No, you're not my father!" Actually, I think it was a cut away shot anyway.
I'm quoting an article from Empire magazine June 2002
"....to keep it secret Hamill was told only the night before filming; renowned leaker Dave Prowse, in the Vader suit, couldn't be trusted at all, and was deliberately sidetracked by a bogus alternative in which Vader tells Luke, "Obi wan Kenobi is your father." Filming the real scene, Prowse knew nothing, and at the crucial moment Hamill imagined the line. It came as much of a schock to Prowse when he saw it as it did everyone else."
David Prowse, the English actor who played (but didn?t voice) Darth Vader in the first three Star Wars, recently told Equity Magazine that he has yet to receive any of the residuals he?s owed for Return of the Jedi? because LucasFilm claims the film hasn?t made a profit.

Meanwhile, Box Office Mojo puts the lifetime take at $475 million, not including the $88 million it made upon re-release in 1997. With a production budget of $32.5 million. LucasFilm is able to get away with it because Prowse?s deal, like most actors, was for net profit, rather than gross. As a /Film commenter points out?
