I thought the same thing. The first one I saw was Empire and I liked it. I was a little kid so it was not hard to impress me. Then I saw Jedi and I liked that one too. When I saw the first one, Star Wars, I was disappointed. It seemed painfully slow and it didn't feel like it was going anywhere. My best friend's dad said Star Wars was the first movie he walked out of.

1. That movie got a boost from all the bad press. "It's so bad, I have to see it."
2. I don't see a Time magazine feature article about Jack and Jill.
3. Star Wars has 93% critical acclaim. J&J has 3%.

Popularity IS the ultimate indicator of quality. Box office takes are not. If a movie is still remembered and loved after 30+ years, it did something right.

I don't think anyone on here will argue that, when it was released, that it was truly a sight to behold. But it doesn't hold up well. In addition to that, we got two other movies in the same universe made by people who were way better at making movies than Lucas.

It's just like Avatar. It's a steaming pile of shit in terms of story but it's really something to watch.

There is no real need to care about Star Wars without Empire and Jedi, and it would have fallen into the dustbin of mere fondness and nostalgia with other fantasy flicks of the time, like Flash Gorgon and Dune, etc.

Maybe I'm the only one but I thought Jar Jar was fine. Yes he was stupid and goofy but he added comic relief to what would otherwise be a more serious film. All the grown up fan boi's would have liked him when they were kids but now it offends their adult sensibilities. Maybe I'd feel differently if I'd been born in 1970 instead of 1980 but I wasn't.

The new movies were all pretty good I thought as well. I liked that they told the story of Anakin and we found out how vader came to be. I agree that he shouldn't have messed with his original works though. They were fine on their own and he could have done everything he needed to do in Episode 3 to tie it to the original Trilogy without monkeying around with the earlier films.

Kids will laugh at almost anything. It takes talent to write something kids AND adults can laugh at.

The earliest I know of is Warner Brothers. You then get Tiny Toons and Animaniacs from that end. Then you get Pixar with its shorts, and some of the flix it helped produce (Up, Toy Story). You get other cartoons like Invader Zim, Ren and Stimpy and (strangely enough) Phineas and Ferb.

Having a goofy looking stupid pratfalling animated character flopping all over the screen is not a mark of genius. He might as well have just done a "booger" joke or two while he was at it.

Lucas needs a grip with reality. He has to admit that the ONLY thing he is good at is image making and accept his limitations. This Emperor not only does not admit being naked, but denies his own gut for what it is.

The original Star Wars was a masterpiece. However, it's probably the only good movie George Lucas had a direct roll in making. I think the success went to his head.

I'm going to go out on a limb here about Jar Jar. I think he's the best character in Episode 1. He has a back story, he has depth, he has reason for being the way he is. He's probably the most developed character in the entire film. All the other characters are flat and one dimensional. They lack any motivation or attributes besides their job.

Uh... in high school we actually had to write papers on Star Wars, was used to teach the "epic hero" archetype. There's more there than you might think.

Yeah, zin underrates ANH pretty badly. Compared to TESB, it's not all that great, but it's still the second-best Star Wars film.

The Ewoks ruined RotJ. They were really the beginning of the end of Star Wars' credibility.
