As soon as done cooking, turn it off. while its still hot, place a wet paper towel on it (or more if needed to cover the used surface, close the lid. When done eating the wet paper towel should have "steam cleaned" the inside enough that it should easily wipe clean with another wet paper towel or sponge.
If you don't do this, and let the surface cool and the gunk harden, then the George is a biatch to clean.
I love how it catches all the grease so you can pour it back on to the food. Man, I'd hate to see that evaporate or burn to the pan...jk
Tried that trick. Didn't help. Maybe it works for the small ones, but not for the big ones, or at least not for me. It's a royal pain to clean no matter how you look at it. I can clean my frying pan in under a minute and it will turn out cleaner than 10 minutes spent on the GF grill.
I also agree that it renders chicken almost uneatable on the outside. Wait, no, not almost. Still, I am looking forward to one with removable plates and adjustable temperature. Apparently other brands make one of those for fairly cheap.
