The Herb/Erb thread got me thinking to;

Is it Geoff as in Jeff?

or

Is it Geoff as in Ge-Off; like GE' OFF ME!

I spell my name Geoff and I have heard just about every variation of "Ge-off" or "get-off", so I am not phased by it anymore.

JEFF

Actually, when followed by an "e" or "i", a "g" makes the same sound as a "j". For an example see "gender" and "gentle". Of course there are special cases, and that is only by the rules of English. Geoff might originate from another language and be subject to different rules.
