That is the first time I've seen that. :p what is it?

Sega CDX or Zelda's Adventure?

CDX was an all-in-one Genesis, Sega CD, and CD player. Zelda's Adventure was a finished but unreleased CD-i game. I have the two released CD-i Zelda games (Link: The Faces of Evil and Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon).

We had Sega CD and 32x when we were kids. My older brothers bought them. 32x games sucked except for Star Wars Arcade, there were better Sega CD games. Lunar obviously is the top for me.

Yeah, kick myself every time knowing how i used to see Zelda's Adventure for sale at HHGregg back in the day. I heard the game sucks but back then I thought it looked amazing. They had quite a few cd-i games but the system didn't interest me much at the time. Neither did 3DO outside of a couple games perhaps.
I was more interested in a NeoGeo or Amiga.

If it makes you feel any better, in the grand scheme of things I'm sure you've missed opportunities that have lost you way more than a measly few hundred dollars ;) Who can guess what terrible games will end up being collectors items?

I don't think whatever you'd get from selling rare CD-i games now could come close to making up for the disappoint the CD-i would have been.

Zeldas Adventure. I was aware and have seen the other 2, but that one looked alot different. I was under the impression this one was one that was slated to be released on CDX.

No way, no how would a license for a Nintendo franchise been allowed on a Sega console.

Lunar is a game many don't know about. But one of the best RPGs ever. I loved it.

It exists but, as I said and as most reported at the time, it was never really released. There are many copies in existence because it was canceled very late in the process, but it's still very rare. There are a ton of counterfeits too. It's hard to call something "released" that was heading to store shelves that were being dismantled at the time.

I don't think you saw it. It was reportedly canceled but not until it was finished and many final copies sent out for review and give-aways or whatever happens to the early unsold production run. You probably saw it promoted in-store because that did happen (as this magazine scan shows).

Also easy to confuse with Zelda: Wand of Gamelon

If you could ever buy it in stores it was released. And if you don't think the release dates listed on the Wikipedia page are very compelling check out this listing for a review in 1996 by a Dutch magazine, which lists a June 8 1995 release date:

http://www.pu.nl/artikelen/review/zeldas-adventure/

Which is a full year after the North American release date of June 4 1994 listed here:

http://zelda.wikia.com/wiki/Zelda%27s_Adventure

It would be very strange for them to cancel the game in 1994 only to end up with packaging specific to the later European release:

http://www.philipscdi.com/images/Game/151_b.jpg

They would have to cancel it again, a full year later. Surely they would have known at that point that they weren't going to the EU version before it got so far in production.

Lots of games had very limited releases and some go on to become highly valued (many much more highly valued than this game is) Something I'm not aware of ever happening is an actual production run with packaging and everything never being sold yet still somehow ending up in people's hands. Review copies would probably not be in packaging, much less would they have remained unopened, and it's unlikely so many of them would have been leaked.

Here you have a guy saying outright he saw it in stores, you're telling him he must be wrong but are you SURE you're not the one who is mistaken? Because I find it very conspicuous that I can't find any information online about this game's cancellation.

See Stadium Events for the NES. Pretty much the only copies that made it out were blind mail orders or something (kinda like Columbia record club).

I'm just saying that he might not have seen (and probably didn't see) what he thinks he saw. If I saw a standee or endcap display for the upcoming game then I might think they had it too. For example, I saw the pre-release promotions for the first two in Babbage's (eventually became GameStop) even though I never saw an actual CD-i or any actual games there. To this day, the only place I have ever encountered new CD-i stuff was Macy's. I developed my large CD-i collection almost exclusively from thrift stores and flea markets.

Zelda's Adventure was widely reported as canceled. Vague "release dates" simply indicate that it got out anyway, but few if any came through normal channels.

I find it odd that they refer to Zelda as the warrior and link as the captive for this game.

Speaking of Lunar, for someone who hasn't played it through what is the best version of the game to play and is it worth playing through today? Obviously it's 16bit graphics. I am almost done with Batman and don't have much of a backlog so I am thinking of picking up an old jrpg I never played. Would you recommend Lunar? Also is there like a game 1 and game 2? I see Silver Star Story Complete is available for ps1 but don't want to start a game that requires me to know what's going on.

You can play either of them w/o playing the other....I don't know what version is best as I've only played the PSX versions. Honestly, I found them to be very hard and dated and couldn't get through them. I really need to go back and try them again.

Totally different scenario than what you're saying. That game was recalled for a branding change (where the rebranded version was commonly available). It didn't get out through mail orders, it got out during the short period where it was available on shelves. It wasn't a game that was ready for shelves then pulled completely and permanently for no reason. I can't imagine a company making a game to completion with packaging and everything then deciding to not let their supply sell to stores, that's just throwing money away.

I'm just saying that he might not have seen (and probably didn't see) what he thinks he saw. If I saw a standee or endcap display for the upcoming game then I might think they had it too. Sure, it's possibly he's mistaken. But right now his memory on this has more weight in my mind than your insistence that it was never on shelves despite evidence that it was not only released but released again a full year later in Europe.

Zelda's Adventure was widely reported as canceled. Vague "release dates" simply indicate that it got out anyway, but few if any came through normal channels.

Okay but widely reported by whom? If it was widely reported why I am failing to find any kind of mention that it was cancelled?

The SNES was vastly superior technology in just about every aspect and had so many great games. But I loved the Genesis. So many amazing Sega exclusives from Golden Axe to Phantasy Star. I will always have a soft spot for the Genesis. All the systems Sega put out before and after it was kind of half baked in my opinion but Genesis was the shiznit.

Interesting how the choice is so overwhelmingly clear in hindsight. Why was this choice so notoriously divisive back in the day?

Many Genesis owners back then just couldn't see it.

it's the same thing now a days. people will put blinders on when they can only afford to purchase one console. they have a need to justify their purchase by making them feel like they always made the correct purchase.

"HURF BLURF YOU'RE A FANBOY BECAUSE YOU'RE POOR!"

I have owned tons of consoles. NES, SNES, N64, Gamecube, Wii, Genesis, SMS (via Genesis SMS adatper), Sega CD, Saturn, Dreamcast. And those are just the ones from Sega and Nintendo. Nevermind the 2600, PS, PS2, PS3, Xbox, Xbox 360, Xbox One...

And yet I still call the Genesis one of my favorite consoles of all time.

Hrm, that isn't a strong vote of confidence. Maybe I'll dig up the dreamcast and finally play Skies of Arcadia or something.
