Hrm, that isn't a strong vote of confidence. Maybe I'll dig up the dreamcast and finally play Skies of Arcadia or something.

The Lunar games have quite a fanbase. I suppose if I had played them when they came out, but I played them in the heyday of PSX -- which was probably bad timing with all the new RPGs. I finished very few on PSX at the time. If you still enjoy playing SNES/Genesis era RPG's I don't see any reason to not try it.

I still need to finish Skies of Arcadia too :/ grr.

Actually there's lots of RPGs I skipped as I started getting into other types of games and one of them was Final Fantasy IX. Now I know what game I'm going to go back and play. I didn't like 8 all that much so I didn't give 9 much of a chance but looking at the RPGs from the day it gets high marks. Should give it a go.

Right but it's just odd to me because in every other game you play as Link.

In Zelda: Wand of Gamelon, you play as Zelda -- and it's much more common than Zelda's Adventure.

I think it's far more likely that Zelda: Wand of Gamelon was seen on a store shelf than Zelda's Adventure.

Well it was some 22 years ago. I'm not certain of anything other than my shock of seeing a Zelda game on CD-i. I also remember seeing the graphics of Zelda Adventure at some point because I was so impressed at how it looked visually....but reviews state that it's blurry and too digitized.

Lunar series escaped my attention. I did try to play it a few years ago but didn't grab me. Not sure I understand why this game ever got so popular. I did however enjoy Phatasy Star 3 back in the day...it felt so epic, the fact that you could get married, have kids...etc.

Super Metroid is probably my favorite 16 bit game, but I didn't really care about any other exclusives on the system that I can think of, so I vote Genesis overall.

Link to the Past, Final Fantasy II and III? Secret of Mana?

SNES easily. Still the best console/library.

I don't think best library at all. Back in those days there was more crap pushed out than people realize. So many titles that you had no clue were any good. Before the Internet got big and people started talking about it and posting videos etc. Luckily Blockbuster and other rental places were available. I must have played 20 bad games for every one I thought was good.

Personally I think the PS1 and PS2 had the best library of games. That's mostly because of the quality of Japanese developers during that time though I suppose. At least for me. Games like Xenogears, Metal Gear Solid, and Resident Evil were just so special on the PS1. The PS2 continued that tradition with classics like Kingdom Hearts, MGS2, Devil May Cry but I know the introduction of FMV to major games around the time of the PS1 was a turn off for some.

Sadly Konami is going mobile only, Capcom pushes out a lot of crap lately, and SquareEnix is not even a shadow of the former Squaresoft. I miss the games they used to bring out. Even their average releases like Brave Fencer Musashi and Onimusha were better than many today. Not to say that today's games aren't good but I don't think that if those games were released today that they would be received as well. Things have changed and I've adapted to that change as best I can. There's just something about certain titles that leave a lasting impression on you that many games today are missing. They're fun and very high quality but it seems like many of them seem to be easily forgettable as I move on to the next one, I don't see as as many classics I guess is what I'm trying to say.

As a kid, I was pretty much a Nintendo boy. I was one of the first kids who had an imported Super Famicom. I would spend recesses debating endlessly which of the two consoles was the superior 16-bits system. In the end, the few poor suckers who had a Megadrive were uncool and forgotten. I’ve had some of my most cherished moments on the Nintendo system: Axelay, Street Fighter 2, Super Mario Kart, Final Fantasy III, Valken, Secret of Mana, Zelda, Yoshi’s Island, Star Wing…

I wouldn’t even look at the Sega system until my cousin swapped systems without my consent. I was left with only two games: Shining Force I and II. I was instantly hooked. I would play those games religiously and became a fan boy overnight. When all my friends moved on to the Playstation or Nintendo 64, I got the Sega Saturn and was introduced to an almost exclusive game collection: Panzer Dragoon, Sega Rally, Guardian Heroes, X-Men vs Street Fighters, KoF series, Puyo Puyo 2, and of course Shining Force 3.

I still love the original Shining Force. It was the game that hooked me up with the Sega world despite the Nintendo fan I was. Even to this day, I play it at least once a year. I regret nothing.

Just completed Illusion of Gaia again on SNES.

Man. The writing of the story / translation is pretty bad, but it's still a beautiful game.

Missed some red jewels. Might play through again with an emulator and try to get all of them.

Not to mention one of THE best soundtracks of the era. Simply beautiful.

Have you played Terranigma? It's the spiritual successor in the "Gaia" trilogy.

I haven't played that. Haven't played Soul Blazer either.

It's funny. Back in the day, most SNES ROM sets had something called "Soul Blazer 2" and marked with an "(E)" for the European region. I loaded it on an emulator (ZSNES) and immediately noticed it was Illusion of Gaia, with some differences in the English translation and character names. I noticed that the title screen was very similar to the Japanese version (Illusion of Time) and a similar title screen appeared in my IoG instruction manual. Years later, I had some suspicions about that ROM. I loaded he ROM in ZSNES and noticed it was running at 60FPS, not 50FPS as a "(E)" European game would. Then I was sure: It was actually beta version of the English localization, originally intended for release in North America. This would have been before Nintendo decided to be the publisher of the game for the North America region and the game was eventually re-worked with the new name and Zelda-style logo.

I notified Cowering on IRC and he updated the entry in his GoodSNES database. Now, most ROM sets identify it correctly as: "(U) [beta]"

The Genesis and SNES versions of Doom were both crap. The N64 one looked good, but by then nobody cared. And when Goldeneye came out it made everybody forget about previous shooters.

"The N64 one" wasn't really Doom: It was Doom 64, which is kind of a spin-off sequel. It's true that they all sucked between SNES, 32X, and 3DO but, between those, I preferred SNES. Eventually the PSX Doom Special Edition came out but I had a PC by that time and preferred Final Doom. :)

I found Wonder Project J2 at a flea market many years ago (before the English fan translation) and one of the first things I noticed when playing was that it had to be the same composer.

I had a SEGA MegaDrive (Genisys). I always liked it. I never felt I was missing anything to my mates with a SNES.

Both were good though, good times.

Wow so much SNES love. I will admit that I grew up with the Genesis and have some bias towards it. Now that i'm revisiting both of these consoles, I have realized that both systems do have a large library of good games and it's much closer than you people realize. I would still give the nod to the Genesis.

Finally playing through Chrono Trigger. Several hours in, but mostly grinding (SNES Asciipad really helps). I got like 12 cats in Crono's house.

Finally started playing to advance the story and I just stopped after defeating the dragon tank and time-traveling to the future. Pretty good so far.

DKC had a bunch of good music. Aquatic Ambiance and Fear Factory are my favorites but I also like most of the others. FamilyJules7X on Youtube has a good electric guitar/bass version of Fear Factory, and I like his versions of a lot of music; metaldaniel03 is another that I seem to love his version of most things he does.

Speaking of music and Chrono Trigger, Tyrano Castle is hugely underrated. I'm not saying it's the best song ever or anything, but it seems like for most game music you can find tons of remakes/electric guitar/etc versions on Youtube, but not for Tyrano Castle (and the few that are on there kinda suck). It would be excellent for bass guitar (you'd definitely know what part I'm talking about there when you hear it), and has other parts that would be good for guitar and keyboard.

Just seems weird as there's tons of Chrono Trigger music love, but somehow that song just doesn't seem to get it. Maybe it's just because there's so much other good music in that game, stuff people probably remember more. Not to spoil it, but the Magus battle gave me chills, the cadence of it as it builds is just awesome, and while it sounds bad now the wind sound really did heighten it.

I don't even really remember the gameplay much, but I think the time I played through might've been on the + game of one of my friends so I didn't have to do the grinding and everything, but the game is great and has a ton of good memorable moments.

For people wanting to get someone into RPGs, I think Chrono Trigger is right up there. It'd be probably one of the top 3 games I'd recommend people try for starting out. I'd probably say Mario RPG is the best starting point, due to the simplified mechanics and everything (but I might be biased since it's the game that hooked me on the genre back then as I wasn't that into them until then).

I love the SNES RPGs. Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy III/VI, and Tales of Phantasia are all in my top 10 favorite games of all time.

Secret of Mana (Seiken Densetsu 2), Seiken Densetsu 3, Super Mario RPG, The Legend of Zelda, Lufia I and II, and EarthBound are just a few others for the console that were excellent.I also spent a lot of time playing the Super Mario games, Donkey Kong Country, Super Metroid, and Street Fighter II, of course.

I loved the Genesis for all the Sonic games and the Phantasy Star games, too, but the SNES is still my favorite console, even compared to later consoles that had other titles I've enjoyed.

I have fond memories playing both when I was a kid. Most of my friends preferred the Genesis as well as kids I went to school with. It was seen as the "cool kid's system", when SNES was seen as their little sister's system to play stupor mario  . I remember when Mortal Kombat 1 came out, and the genesis version had a blood code, and that automatically made the Genesis a cooler system because we didn't get kiddy, dumbed down fatalities. Believe it or not, that was the coolest thing in the world to an 11 year old in the 90s. I remember going YEAH EAT A **** the first time I pulled off Sub Zero's fatality. The moral of the story is kids don't like playing kids games.

This is probably one of my all-time favorite games ever. There are just so many side quests, and alternate endings (many very difficult to find originally (not so hard now that they are all documented on the internet, but the game came out before the internet had really taken off)).

I will also say that the re-release on the Nintendo DS is very good, with some added content as well. Very much worth it if you ask me.
