In my experience no. I have two long cables attached to my hub. 1 50 foot to my hub from my router and 1 75 foot from my hub to my computer. Amoung a few shorter ones to other computers in the house.

Just take your time making the cables and follow a standard cable color code for wiring and it should be better then store bought. It is exactly what you need, no just a standard length.

Just make sure its well constructed, you should be able to tell with a physical check. Some generic Cat5 cables are simply DIY ones crimped by the shopkeepers, and they may not perform such a good job, so try and make sure that you get at least some quality in the construction. Also 50ft shouldn't be a problem. IIRC, the Ethernet standard allows up to 100m lenght before a repeater is required. Not so sure about Fast Ethernet, which is probably what you'll be using, but if anything the length should be even more.
