generic ram for slow system...i just need an increase

MrDudeMan

Lifer
i have a p3 600mhz system and it only has 128mb of ram, but i want it to have at least 256

i am running windows xp on it, but i think i would get a lot better performance with double the ram

only 2 dimms, pc100 is fine, and both chips in right now are 64, so i basically cant use those.....

my question, will any pc100 or pc133 (since its the same price on pricewatch) work fine? or am i gonna have to get something a little better to guarantee compatibility?

TIA

I'd reccomend crucial for the best compatibility, but you should make sure to get name brand boards like micron or kingston or something. Generic RAM can cause BSODs and general instability in worst case scenarios, so it'd be best to get name brand RAM. And my reccomendation is that RAM is so friggin cheap right now if you're not running on an i810 or something you should use 2X 256.

Very nice in Win2K and I guarnatee you won't spend much over 100$ if you go for the decently RAM.

thanks, but i dont think you understood

i use this to type papers, talk on AIM, and get on AT

there is no need for any kind of speed, but sometimes the computer lags and its because there is no ram and im running winxp

all i need is 256mb of ram that will be guaranteed to work

your information was helpful, however, because i will be getting some more ram and that answered some of my questions! 🙂

For that stuff, yeah, 256 is enough. Thats what I have and page file usage never goes above 225. Until I start a game (Doesn't apply to you)

Get name brand PC133 (tis a bit cheaper than PC100, weird, I know) and I would personally reccomend 1X256 as that would give you a bit more leeway on future upgrades. The max your board would support would be (I think) 512MB. 256 might feel cramped in a year or two, so having one slot free would be good.

Yeah, get a cheap name brand like Kinsgston value or something. Just anything but generic! And 1X256 is the way to go. Auction off your old RAM to make up the difference.
