generic gateway mother board upgrade help

Planing to upgrade my pentium II 350 to a pentium III. Was told by gateway staff that I can only upgrade to a Pentium III 550 mhz (max). Still squemmish about changing mother board (newbie).

Is there any reason why I cant use a Pentium III 700 to 800 as long as the fsb is 100mhz? Sorry gateway does not really tell you what kind of board I have only that it supports 100mhz fsb.

My system is a G6-350/pc100 192mb sdram/vodoo 3 2000 pci/power supply 200wats.

Please dont laugh at my system its all I have. Thinking of changing motherboard msiktv7 pro 2-a and processor to a athlon 1ghz in the near future but still to much of a newbie to try it.

Hoping the processor change will fill my needs (games) for the next 4-6 months.

Please advise on how to resolve processor upgrade issue.

Have you thought of getting a GeForce MX to replace the 3d2000? That should hold you for a few months then you can do a full blown upgrade. However, Gateway has manuals online for your system, you will need to write down the bios number at boot, and check on the web site for a reference. Some of the boards Gateway used didn't have much choice in the processor side, so they may be telling you the truth. I also wouldn't plan on putting a Athlon in that Gateway case, your PS wouldn't handle the load.

Gateway uses or did use Intel motherboards I have the same thing but a 400 PII

what is the model number on your gateway motherboard?

i know that most gatewate motherboards, with the latest bios, can, in fact, run a pentium 3 coppermine or an celeron coppermine overclocked with the help of an adapter (either msi or iwill; no abit).

i had some gateway bx motherboards that run a 667mhz celeron at 100fsb, or 1000mhz; stable.

will probably do a videocard upgrade ge 32 or 64 ddr.Instead of changing processor. Just noticed some of the new games have pentium 400 or better requiremnt. Will do full blown upgrade in 6 months hopefully athlon systems are below 1000 then.

I've run a 600E on a Gateway BX motherboard that originally was home to a Pentium II 400.

With the latest BIOS, you should have no problem.

Hey guys, I just got my hands on a gateway pentium II BX motherboard (part #4000444), but it seems to use some weird front panel pin connectors and is not compatible with my standard ATX case. Now, I can't finish building my computer. The vendor (compgeeks) didn't mention any of this so I didn't know, but should have guessed since it's a gateway. Can you guys tell me what the connector looks like? Is it like an adapter for the standard connectors? Or am i screwed completely. This sucks.

As per your previous thread that you posted, about the best information you are going to get is from the Gateway site. Did you look up the number on your motherboard as directed here? Post it here and maybe some better advice can be given. You will have to flash your BIOS to get up to speed anyways.

I would say that it does NOT support PIII based on this line from the page:

Don't know what to recommend but it does seem like you have limited CPU expandability.

I have the same mobo. The best processor than I could use and the mobo works well was a Pentium 3 600 E - And I think funny because I try a ( older processor than coppermine ) P3 600 512 Katmai and the mobo dont works, freezing the system or crashing everything ( I try in a formated hard disk also )...

But if you ask me, the coppermine are working well...

My friend , we have 3 types of processors p3 600:
600(mendocino core)the first 600 p, with 512 cash
600e (coppermine core @100)600 but with 256 cash
600eb(coppermine core @133)the same, but works in fsb 133


This Gateway mobo DONT SUPPORT FSB 133 ( forget the coppermine eb )
I try the 600 mendocino core,but dont work well, crashing and freezing everytime. My last chance then, was the coppermine 600e and I can tell for you: Its working very well,and I dont know why the Pentium 3 mendocino dont works , but can be a voltage core problem or something that...

still deciding if i should go for a P3 600E, or take a bold step and get a new mobo msi or abit with a thunder bird, then I have to change my case,power supply and memory to 133. Quiet a daunting task for someone whos only upgrade experience is changing video card and memory.
Good thing about this just bought the wife a lap top so this means go signal to crash this gateway sysytem. Last time I am getting a generic system (gateway,compaq ect) not that much options to upgrade and over clock.


any radical ideas on how to overclock this system? cant even use softfsb, no options to adjust fsb even with jumpers. No luck in softfsb either.

The link I just posted was for your MB too. The MB is an Intel MP440BX. Haven't tried a coppermine slot adaptor in it yet tho. Might not be able to handle it. If anybody's tried it in the MP440BX please post the results. There are alot of those boards floating around lately.

I did a mb swap on a gateway P200 a while back. Put in a MSI kt7-pro and an athlon 700. I also swapped in a decent 300w ps, hdd, and modem(lightning hit). It wasn't too bad save for having to modify the io plate to match the new mb. At least all of the existing stuff was in the right spot just had to add all of the new stuff.

They sure were amazed at the speed increase.
