Generic broadband router/gateway $20 after MIR

Wow, this thing is so generic that it doesn't even have an "off-brand" label. But maybe it is exactly what you need, all you cheap people out there...

Microcenter router for $20

This appears to be a single-port router, meaning that you will need a hub or switch if you are hooking up multiple computers to a broadband connection. On the other hand, if you just need a hardware firewall to do network address translation at the cheapest possible price, this might be exactly what you need.

No, this isn't a D-Link, SMC, or Linksys, and if you demand top quality, you are probably better off sticking with one of those. If you tend to buy networking equipment treating it as commodity pricing--which is perfectly rational for the typical home user, IMO--then this is a good deal.

That is an Efficient Speedstream 2601: Link

I have one and don't use it, as my DSL provider allows multiple concurrent PPoE sessions. When I had a very fast connection (3500/800 - Sprint ION R.I.P.) I found that it couldn't maintain such speeds; it tops out at around 1600/400.

Microcenter's had these for awhile now, since before christmas i think. If you want you could search for the old thread and find the actual speeds I got.

OK I got a few questions on this on cause man does it look good.

1) What kind of management interfaces does it sport (telnet, console, web, etc?)

and

2) It says it can be used as a DSL or Cable router - but doesnt that mean it would have to authenticate and initiate a PPoE session? For 20 bucks can this thing do that???

Any help is appreciated.

Here's a faq on PPoE: link

My cable modem service provider doesn't have it, so I don't need to worry, but the faq does say that nearly all SOHO routers have PPoE.

I bought and returned it because I could not get it to work with my Linksys hub. I tried forever but could not get it to connect to Bellsouth's Fastaccess. I swapped it out with the Xsense Palmrouter they were clearing out for $49.99 and it works great. If they still have any more left it is a great buy. It's a standard router with 4 port hub built in.

I used to drop connection with Bellsouth about once a day using just the external Alcatel modem and WinXP. When I called support they told me I had to REBOOT my computer and modem once a day in order to have it working right. This was confirmed by a manager as well. I said NO WAY and hung up. Now with the router installed I think I've had to reset my connection just twice in the past MONTH. lol

Oh, it has a web interface for those who asked.
