GENERALS!!!!

Who agrees with me that it was very weired (almost stupid) that the in game movies have been changed to "in Game" instead of movie.

If you have no idea what i am talking about, this may sound a little clearer.

In previous Command and Conquers inbetween stages there where real people acting, or at least the looked real, now it has been changed to in game footage, i consider this very cheap and boring....

Just a thought, any comments.....

Please tell me that at the end there is at least ONE movie....

Thoughts?

I actually like the in game cut scenes then the previous live action or CG scenes from the previous C&C's. In my opinion the live action snece where pretty lame, stupid, or badly acted. At least with the in game cut scenes in Generals they help tell what your current mission will be about.

I actually liked the cut scenes in Red Alert 2, but the cut scenes in Generals haven't really dissappointed me. I'd say they're good.

ppl buy games for the game, not for the movies, generally...

in other words, few would buy a game with good movies and horrible gameplay

games sell on word of mouth, when ppl say - "you have to buy this game" how many times are they talking about movies instead of game?

making movies for games is just not cost effective, and as game companies continue to consolidate, or die, especially in current faltering economy, we will see less and less fmv with real actors

i cant imagine paying for production of what is equivalent to a low budget TV show is cheap compared game development costs. jedi knight to jedi knight 2 is another game that dropped real actors but remains a great game

think of it this way, do u want cheesy acting and special effects or would u rather they put that money into making the game better? (whether they put that m oney into making game better or just save it is debateable, but you could say, would you rather see movies and have a poorer game?). red alert 2 movies were awful too, it was just tanya/kari wuhrer that made them bearable 🙂

I agree with you... I loved the live action movies from the original C&Cs...

I'm totally in favor of spending money on improving gameplay over producing pre-rendered FMV scenes / video footage when the development budget is tight.

That said, I prefer to have both. Often the element that tips the balance in favor of my buying a Blizzard game is I know they're going to have some fantastic looking cutscenes (I thought WC3 took the easy route too often as well). Of course I'm usually not too worried about the gameplay either.

EA Pacific could clearly have afforded to have some higher budget cutscenes, and ultimately I think the in-engine stuff is just a way to milk more profit out of the title. The whole "our in-game 3D engine looks so great we don't need to pre-render our cutscenes" argument is bull, in my opinion. When normal gameplay looks like a scene from the final fantasy movie, then fine - but until then I'd rather have some high production value movie clips to get me immersed in the story.

of course we'd always rather have both good gameplay and good cutscenes (even though i think id prefer good quality final fantasy-type cutscenes over cheesy poorly acted live action with cheesy sets and special effects... if youre going to give me live cutscenes do it professionaly), but its simply a financial decision... sure EA has money to put lots in their games and would still make a profit, but by NOT putting it in they make MORE profit... id dare say C&C Generals will make more profit without cutscenes then it would from the FEW extra people who will not buy Generals because it doesnt have live actors (how many ppl is that?)

im all for Kari in every game though

you do buy some games for storyline and/or gameplay, but i wouldnt say C&C is one of those... its the great gameplay that made C&C good and that makes Generals good. Final Fantasy i play for storyline, and i cant imagine a new FF without FMV (its one of the highlights), but even for storyline games, FMV is not necessary... im playing FF4 right now and loving it

i hate to compare with war3, but the generals cutscenes were pretty much crap compared to war3. but then, the generals cutscenes were crap because the story was pretty crappy. (a theme?) and i wish you could SKIP the scenes.

i thought that the red alert 2 movies were fantastic. they really added to the game, but again, ra2 had an actual good story line.

the rendered movies in generals were crap; they were just the cutscenes rendered (most of them). really pretty pointless.

i'd agree that if kari wuhrer is on the screen, its probably ok. the acting was bad, but it kept things interesting.

all in all, i think i like red alert 2 much more. the 3d aspect of generals didnt seem to add that much for me

In game movies are good, in the sence that you can get a grasp on things that are happening and some semblance of a storyboard. Take for example, Diablo 2. The movie sequences, which there were 5 of, showed a story in themselves, but at least to me, had very little effect on what was happening in the actual game. Now adays, they are better at correlating the two. Like I say, in game is good, not nessesarily a cheap way out, but good, but I enjoy the cinematic movies better.

I agree that "real" film sequences add to the game, but then, as someone said, to do so, the game must have a story to begin with.

I loved the sequences from the original C&C, never played single player RA though, so no comment on those 🙂

is it me or is china way to powerful in multiplayer mode in this game? (as in if you are them you win)

I think China is a little better, but not overly so.

They actually have the sides decently balanced. They list the win stats for each side online, and it is something like:

USA 32%
China 36%
GLA 32%

I care more about the game play then with then how good the box looks, if you know what I mean. But I confess that to this day, I still like that scene in C&C where the NOD Kane shoots Seth on the head. 😀

I thought Kane kicked ass all over the place 😀

Actually seeing a real person there did so much for the game overall.
Of course even when playing the GDI I kinda rooted for the NOD, simply cause Kane was a kickass bad guy 🙂

I lvoe generals.

Ofcourse, FMV would have been nicel ike the previous CnC games, but I don't mind the ingame cutscenes.

Both would have been nice,

ie. FMV to describe story and to show pretty colours/character interaction and ingame cutscene to put you right into the battle story.

I liked it in the last Chinese mission how you sorta started off all of a sudden.

the ingame scenes are ok but i preffered the old way of doing things, movies better for hyping it up a bit and extending the fun-ness of the whole thing, for me Generals feels a bit "On the cheap" and lacking the humour of the cnc series, actually lost a lot of the cnc feel and polish in singleplayer, not really a cnc game at all. i suspect it has the best setup for MP though, but havent got round to that.

edit: bah i misread poll question and thought it was about it being good/bad to ditch the movie clips; so voted bad instead of good 🙁

Wait.. you watch those things? I thought they were just to make you press every button at once to get playing, but ending up restarting cause you hit the wrong buttons... at least thats the way it works with me.
