Had my hopes up :(

* New Quest TV app
* But it's mostly just a launcher for other apps
* And they removed user-generated content

They really need to:

1. Create an AIO streaming app
2. Add a "watch together" feature
3. Let you purchase in-app content

The Skybox VR cinema scene with the 2D 4K Avatar 3 IMAX trailer on the Quest 3 really changed my perspective on VR as a viable movie-watching experience. What VR needs is a Roku app lol.

I'd really like to try one due to the quality, but most of the apps I use are on the Meta Store.

Great to see high-quality improvements still happening!

There are all these great headsets coming out but very little content to justify getting a new one. My G2 is still good but I only do occasional space sims and Google Earth in VR now. I see no reason to get a new one, especially since it would need new prescription lenses too.

Same issue as the original Wii:

1. Phenomenal technology
2. Incredible launch games (how addicting was Wii Sports??)
3 ...zero follow-through

We need more stuff like Alyx VR that are truly immersive games with high production value, but the corporate interest & thus funding required just isn't there. At least the Quest setup has an incredible array of gaming options:

As well as movies:

Samsung Galaxy XR:

$1,800

Android XR headset

Can support 'almost all' Android apps

$1,800

Controllers are $250 & are not included

72hz default (90hz available upon request)

Galaxy XR has a rigid plastic strap that cradles the back of your head, like a Quest Elite Strap, offering balanced support. But it's non-detachable, and this means you're stuck with it for the lifetime of the headset. You can't swap it out for a soft strap to lean back on a chair, sofa, or bed. If you're interested in the idea of watching movies on a giant virtual screen, a pitched use case for both Vision Pro and Galaxy XR, you need to be aware of this. And if you're interested in using the headset on a plane, for example, you'd find yourself bumping the back of the strap into the seat frequently.

Just like Apple Vision Pro, Samsung Galaxy XR requires the included external tethered battery. And as such, everything I said about the tradeoffs of a tethered battery in my Apple Vision Pro review applies.

When I put on Galaxy XR, I had to consciously adjust the battery to a suitable position. And when I stood up, I had to put it in my pocket and move my arm in front of the cable. It's an added friction that crops up even in a 25 minute demo, and one that you need to be aware of if you're coming from a headset with a built-in battery, or considering getting your first-ever headset.

Well, I hope it has some compelling content lol

WinlatorXR:

WinlatorXR is an experimental Windows emulator designed to allow users to play PC games directly on Meta Quest, Pico and Play for Dream VR headsets without needing a connected PC. It extends the capabilities of the existing Winlator emulator, which lets you run Windows apps and games on Android devices, by adding support for OpenXR platforms.

WinlatorXR offers two main modes: flat mode and VR mode. In flat mode, the analog stick acts as a mouse cursor, providing more accurate control than a typical smartphone interface. In VR mode, head movements are translated into mouse movements, allowing a basic level of virtual reality interaction with PC games. You can switch between these modes on the fly, making it versatile for different gaming needs.

"Tested" games:

New hardware rumours

Speculation heats up as Valve may reveal new gaming gear this week:

  1. a redesigned Steam Controller with finger tracking,
  2. a high-end VR headset codenamed Deckard, and
  3. a console-like device called Valve Fremont.

Mocked-up images of a new Steam Controller appear, as speculation rises around Valve revealing new gaming hardware this week

A new VR headset? A new gaming console?

The speculation seems to originate from trusted leaker Brad Lynch (SadlyItsBradley), who stoked the fires overnight by sharing an AI-generated mock-up of what he says the new Steam Controller will look like. Notably, the haptic thumbpads have moved towards the bottom of the controller whereas they used to be towards the top. Lynch claims there's full finger-tracking in the grips, and that the controller can detect how far away your hands are from the handles.

It's also Lynch who suggested a reveal date of 12th November, according to a coherent round-up of Valve hardware rumours on Reddit. As you can see from that post, the bulk of the other patent-related rumours revolve around a new VR headset, which is believed to be codenamed Deckard - although it's also sometimes referred to as Steam Frame. That name - Steam Frame - may also refer to a new operating system developed for the device. The information suggests we're about to see another high-end VR headset priced at around the $1200 mark, possibly more.

The console rumours, meanwhile, revolve around something codenamed Valve Fremont, a games-capable box that features custom AMD processors and a Radeon graphics card. Again, the rumours originate from Brad Lynch, who highlighted the device's appearance on cross-platform benchmarking site Geekbench earlier this year.
