General Tso's chicken

XMan

Lifer
I love this stuff . . . anybody else like it?

I'm looking at recipes right and debating making some this weekend . . . but I don't have a wok.

yes i like it, but only when it's made right. sometimes they make it wrong and it is ruined 🙁 mandarin pepper fish is also good.

i wouldn't go that far... good potstickers and fried wonton are the best. has to be home made though 😛

hmm.. i think i'd still rather have the real thing.

chicken lo mein is also really good. and beef and brocoli.

Don't forget about those crabmeat rangoons... damn good.

I could eat those all day long.

DAMMIT. You guys are making me hungry and the closest good Chinese food place is like 200 miles away.

Yeah I love it too.

One place in town happens to be the best, its just not the same anywhere else, and it also happens to be a couple of blocks from my house. The problem is thats the only thing I ever want, and I don't try much else off the menu, except to steal some of what my wife ordered.

i thought so too, but when i had it i realized it was just as good. if not better.

200 miles away? damn. i've got 4 within 20 miles of my house. i'm really hungyr too.. not for chinese. Gotta love bagel bites.

that and fried rice.

"Flied lice?!? It's 'fried rice', you plick!"

It seems there's a General Tso's chicken thread every few weeks

The last one was a month ago . . . but I was more intending to see if I could make it without a wok than to complain I didn't like it, like in the last thread.

So, back on topic, kids - can you make it right without a wok?

what exactly IS general tso's chicken???
Basically, it's chicken pieces that have been fried and then cooked with this sweet-ish red sauce. At least, that's how i've seen it done, it varies since it's an American creation. You might be able to do it without a wok 😀 I could find out how if you really really want, i think it's pretty easy.

And don't get me started on "good" chinese food 😛 Go to Boston or Pittsburgh and get fried rice from there, if you want good fried rice. Most chinese restaurants i've seen, usually ones that claim "New York style", are usually all wussy with the soy sauce, and instead of getting a dark, rich smelling fried rice, you get plain old "fried" rice that has a similar color with paella, which isn't that good. You're missing out if you've never had bostonian fried rice, but then again, it differs depending on your perspective of chinese food.

Now, the REAL question is... Does REAL General Tso's Chicken come WITH or WITHOUT broccoli? I've had it at a few different Chinese restaurants, and it's been served both ways.

I also like Pork Lo Mein, Chicken with Mixed Vegetables, Pepper Beef, and Shrimp with garlic sauce. It's debatable as to which of Chinese entrees is the best, but everyone knows what the best Chinese appetizer is. The Pu Pu Platter! 🙂

That aint real chinese food. Most chinese restaurants dont even come close to making real chinese dishes in terms of flavor, and most of their flavors are suited for Americans, they tend to be very sweet or with some kind of sweet sauce put onto them.

Actually, "Real" Chinese food doesn't exist in America 🙂

Also fried rice isn't that popular in Asia. 😀 (but i like it!)

Thanks Dan,now you've got me craving chinese food ! 😛

sure you can. who needs a wok to fry the boneless chicken pieces?
and you don't need the wok to cook up the sauce.

Now, the REAL question is... Does REAL General Tso's Chicken come WITH or WITHOUT broccoli? I've had it at a few different Chinese restaurants, and it's been served both ways.

heh heh, i'd like to hesitate to call that the defining question... that broccoli is merely garnish. It has no bearing on whether G.C. is 'real' or not. Meanwhile, what is 'real' G.C.? You can say what is 'good G.C. but it's hard to define real or fake, because it's not like there are chains of Chinese Food places. Like McDonald's, where you can easily say hey these aren't 'real' McDonald's fries. So many Chinese takeouts and restaurants are mom and pops and each joint has their own version, some cut corners for their convenience, some get more fancy.

Don't forget about those crabmeat rangoons... damn good.

what are those?

Is sesame chicken General Tso's chicken minus the spicy flavor?

I have been told that it ought to not be this way. I was told that the places where you go and order both at the same time, and if the difference you describe is the only difference, (plus of course the S.C. is gonna have sesame sprinkles) then unfortunately, that joint is cutting corners for the sake of time and or they don't know how to make them differently (ghetto joint).

Some of these places, the fried chicken is the same stash for the sweet and sour and the Tso and the seasame, again simplifying for themselves. the sweet and sour is flour + baking powder. The Tso and Seasame breading is cornstarch. Between the Tso and the Sesame, the sauces should be noticably different, and the chicken pieces, Tso and Sesame, are different in size. The size difference is the rarest to be implemented in my experience.
