Try not to ride the clutch. When I see the red light I just shift to neutral and let the car cruise.

As far as downshifting....when going from 5th to 4th you can just shift it right away in one motion. If going from 5th to 3th or 4th to 2nd is recommended that you double clutch (search google if you don't know). After you master that you can try doing heel-toe-shifting and the likes :)

In japan minivans are pretty popular to mod. Go to a japanese bookstore and you will find racing magazines for minivans.

bikers are slow getting in gear because we're usually not in a hurry (probably just cruising around town)... but if I'm late for an appointment, my bike would never see neutral and you will quickly realize what 0-60mph in 2.9sec really means :).

Lately, since I've been laid off, I've been in "cruising around" mode, too. However, I still am considerate of people behind me. The rant is referring to rush hour traffic, when I came upon these inconsiderate mofos on a regular basis. For every half second you fiddle around with your thumb up your ass, a couple more cars fail to get through the light. Some people drive like they're the only one on the road. Pisses me off!

It's like the people who pull up to an ATM, 10 seconds later, they roll down their window, 10 more seconds fumbling around in their purse, 20 seconds to insert the card, enter a simple PIN and what type of transaction they need. Finally, after receiving their cash, they spend another 20 seconds putting it back in their purse, rearrange the contents (or some damn thing, God knows WTF they're doing), put the purse somewhere on the floor, step on the brake, put it back in gear, mosey on off like they have all the time in the world... don't worry about the 10 cars lined up behind you! SOB!!! :frown:

You have drive-in ATM's? Hahahaha... car dependant USA. Why don't you just park it and WALK in where there's a lot more ATM's? ;)

downshit to slow down then use teh brake when you about to stop.

as fir down shitfing for more power it works if your car can handel it. some automatics do it for you when you punch it.
also delends on how fast your goin

like yesterday i was dooin 135 in a Porsche 911 carrera put it into 6th at 135 @ 3000 RPMs

downshiftin wouldent do much for me there only way to go is up

"Why don't you just park it and WALK in where there's a lot more ATM's?"

Same reason I pay for my gasoline with a credit card at the pump. I'm out of there MUCH quicker! If I'm the only one to pull up to the ATM, I can have my money before you even get parked! You would think if there's only one car ahead of you, you could still get the money quicker than walking in. Hah! Depends on who the dolt in front of you is! :frown:

started driving stick recently and im ok with it but had a couple questions...

1. when coming to a stop in local traffic i usually break, clutch in to prevent stall, then break to complete stop and return the gear (from 2nd/3rd whatever) to neutral at the stop. sounds easy enough, but i know couple ppl who slip it into neutral and ride the break to the stop. which is usually better? (i hardly ever downshift unless im coming to a rolling turn).

Well I do it like this: I get my feet off the gas, brake a while later, clutch in, release the gear. Saves the brakes I guess. Sometimes (if I'm far away from the place I need to stop at etc.) I get my feet off the gas and put the clutch in. Then brake with the engine before using the brakes.

2. when im on the highway, i hear sometimes ppl downshift to get more power so they can pass easier or watever. but dont u have to slow down to the designated speed range of that gear to downshift to that gear? or is this mainly used for 5th to 4th and back? i usually dont switch lanes/pass/etc unless i absolutely have to but if i do i normally mash the gas and it picks up pretty well.

I only downshift from 5th to 4th. Usually 5th is meant for cruising (to save gas), but if you want to do any serious acceleration, you need the 4th. Of course, there will be differences between cars.

edit: 3. also if i downshift to get more power should i have to give it more gas immediately since the rpms jump up already?

Not necessarily. When I drove my brothers friend Golf GTI, overtaking was as simply as downshifting from 5th to 4th. No additional gas was needed, the car just flew past the other cars ;).

tips, advice appreciated... tia

What I like to do is rev my LS1 up to a growling 4500 RPM while in neutral at 40 mph. Then I release the clutch into 2nd at that speed and hear squealing like you wouldn't belive. The front end picks up a bit and the whole car takes off like a bullet. From 40 mph I can reach 100 mph in a few seconds. I can feel my right arm and legs tingling with anticipation as I write this.
