general lap top settings

i just got my first lap top and i'm curious if there are some settings i should adjust/tweak that i may not know about since i've only ever owned desktops.

if you could give a brief explanation why i'd appreciate that as well.

the laptop is a dell xps m1710 with vista.

When I first got my laptop, first thing I did was uninstall every bloat it had, then tweaked the power settings within the control panel. Also run a registry cleaner when you finished uninstalling unneccessary software.
 
ya i was even considering formating and installing a clean copy of vista. but i dont think they actually give you a vista cd, just a recover cd.

this lap top will mostly be plugged in so battery life isnt going to be a worry for me. i was thinking of turning off most of the power saving settings, would that be bad even with battery life not being an issue?
