:cool:I need to replace the USB ports on my HP pavilion dv1000 laptop, only one of three is usable. Does anyone know where to buy these USB ports? and how to install in the laptop?

Probably not possible as they are likely part of the motherboard .. So that means a whole new board.
Unless all you need are new jacks .. they can be had, but to install requires the mobo out and very, very
careful work with a soldering iron. You would probably do more damage trying to change them. Easy way
out is just buy a Mini USB Hub and plug it into the one still working USB port .. they are not very big and
not very costly

For example: *****/usb-2-0-4-ports-hub-with-adapter-silver.html

Or this one: *****/usb-2-mini-hub-4-port.html

Before you go messing with the motherboard - are you sure the port is physically damaged/broken and it's not the controller thats messed up?

You can look here: http://www.digikey.com/ and see if you can find a matching USB port.

You can remove the old port by using desoldering wick and sucking up the solder until the port comes out. Then simply put in your new port and solder and you're good to go.

You could use the solder wick method, but my preference is a Vacuum Tip
Desoldering Iron ... it is certain to clear out any solder from the board holes.
A lot of boards these days are multilayer and if you try to remove a part without
all the solder being removed, you could damage the plated through hole. You could
also clip the component off at the top of the board, then carefully remove each pin
one by one. Do not attempt to wiggle all 4 pins or so that the jack may have. If you
are not careful you will damage the board.

Welcome to AT GH Forum.

Plug a little portable USB Hub to the port thta us working rather than destroying the whole laptop.

If you wind up needing the physical ports replaced, PM me. I'm a soldering fool with all the tools.
