I am going to get my fiance genealogy software for Christmas. She found a great uncle that has been compiling family history recently by hand. She just got a copy of his hand-written reports last week and made a .pdf of all of them. Supposedly he can trace down her mother's side "to the 1500s" but there isn't alot of sourcing. She can go back 7 or 8 generations on her mother's side (5 lived on the plot of land they still own in Texas) and only 2 on her father's side.

I am looking between Legacy 7.0 and Family Tree Maker 2009. It seems Legacy gets better reviews and I am not sure if we will want to pay the $13-20/mo for ancestry.com, however FTM seems to be more oriented towards people that do not have a large amount of family history but they are still searching. That is definitely where she is. We are not LDS so we do not have access to (what I understand as) their records and we are the only people in our family really interested.

Do you guys have software recommendations or good resource recommendations?

I've always wanted to be a Genealogist. Something about playing with Vagina's all day just appeals to me so much. :music:

You don't have to be LDS to access the records. Just find a local LDS ward building in your area that has a geneology center (call and find out) and they'll help you out. It's pretty much the best resource for family history research, hands-down. I *think* there's free training at most centers once a week, or you could just ask someone who volunteers there for instructions.

QFT. They'll help you out for free. A quick google search turned up a locator for their family history centers.

Family history center locator

Here's the blurb they have on the site about their centers...
Family History Centers are branch facilities of the Family History Library in Salt Lake City. Centers provide access to most of the microfilms and microfiche in the Family History Library to help patrons identify their ancestors. Everyone is welcome to come to the centers and use Family History Center resources.

Or you could go to something like geni.com for free. My mom barely used FTM after I bought it for her, but has been on Geni.com about every day.
