Gene Hackman - Good, Bad or the Lost???

Do you think that Gene Hackman is better as a Good Guy, Bad Guy or the Lost Guy???

Examples (These are just the movies that I have seen):

Good Guy:

The French Connection (1971)
The Poseidon Adventure (1972)
French Connection II (1975)
Hoosiers (1986)
Bat*21 (1988)
The Package (1989)
Loose Cannons (1990)
Narrow Margin (1990)
Class Action (1991)
Enemy of the State (1998)
The Replacements (2000)
Behind Enemy Lines (2001)

Bad Guy:

Superman (1978)
Superman II (1980)
Superman IV: The Quest for Peace (1987)
Unforgiven (1992)
Wyatt Earp (1994)
The Quick and the Dead (1995)
Crimson Tide (1995)
Extreme Measures (1996)
Runaway Jury (2003)

The Lost Guy (Sometimes unwittingly on the bad side):

Bonnie and Clyde (1967)
Marooned (1969)
Young Frankenstein (1974)
No Way Out (1987)
The Firm (1993)
Get Shorty (1995)
The Birdcage (1996)
Absolute Power (1997)

How is he the bad guy in Crimson Tide? The whole point of the movie is that the system failed.

I would say in Crimson Tide he would be best categorized as The Lost Guy. He meant well but just made bad judgement.

actually both viewpoints are valid in the situation detailed in the movie, that was the problem.

Re: Crimson Tide - If you had a military background, you would probably say he was not "bad". However, most civilians would put him in the bad category because, even when faced with Washington's character's logical alternatives and pleas for him to further evaluate the situation, Hackman's character would not budge. I do not think it was unwittingly, either. I think it was stubbornness (which is baaaaaaad).

You left out: Awesome guy

as in, his role as Royal Tennenbaum.

I had to leave out movies I had not seen or could not remember.

MotionMan

He would perhaps best be categorized under "Lost" for that role 😉

Wow...tough question. He won an Oscar for his role in French Connection and for his role in Unforgiven (probably my favorite western of all time).

Such a great actor. I can't choose...sorry.

The Conversation

I always wanted to see that movie, but never have...yet.

I hear his character in 'Enemy of the State' is suppose to be either the same guy as in 'The Conversation' or based on that character. (There is a picture of him in his "cage" in 'Enemy of the State' that is from 'The Conversation'.)
