Sadly, Gene Hackman, his wife Betsy Arakawa, and their dog were found dead in their New Mexico home after a welfare check. Very possibly CO poisoning.

Wonderful acting career. RIP

Makes me incredibly sad that this is how it happened. He was 95 and had an incredible life but his wife was only 63. Sounds like there were three dogs in total and only one of them died. Just tragic.

Speculation: the dog died of thirst or starvation after its people died.

Oh god yeah it's starting to look really suspicious Dog was locked away in a closet in the bathroom, the other two were free and healthy. Wife had pills scattered around her in the bathroom by a space heater that was moved. Door open. ugh that just sucks.

I read another article that said the dog that died was in a crate while the other two dogs were able to go through the dog door.

The actor Gene Hackman died from heart disease about a week after his wife, Betsy Arakawa, died in a separate room of their New Mexico home from a virus linked to rodents, the authorities said on Friday.
The revelation that the famous and reclusive couple had died of natural causes put to rest much of the speculation that followed the discovery of their bodies on Feb. 26. But it also raised new questions about the state of mind of Mr. Hackman, who investigators said had advanced Alzheimer’s disease, and why the couple was not discovered sooner.
Ms. Arakawa, 65, had run a series of errands on Feb. 11, but the authorities could find no evidence of any activity after that, suggesting that she could have died that day. Mr. Hackman, 95, is believed to have died about a week later, on Feb. 18, according to New Mexico’s chief medical examiner, Dr. Heather Jarrell.
Mr. Hackman was found on the floor of the mudroom in the couple’s home, near his cane, while Ms. Arakawa was found on a bathroom floor, beside a counter with common medication scattered about that investigators later determined did not play a role in her death. They were not discovered until Feb. 26, when a maintenance worker arrived to the couple’s home east of Santa Fe and grew worried when no one answered the door. The worker contacted a security guard, who called 911.

Dr. Jarrell said it was possible, given Mr. Hackman’s Alzheimer’s disease, that he did not know that his wife had died. It was unclear whether Mr. Hackman was able to take care of himself on his own. Autopsies were performed on the couple, Dr. Jarrell said, and Mr. Hackman’s showed that his stomach was empty, meaning he had not eaten recently, but she said he did not appear to be dehydrated.
Sheriff Adan Mendoza of Santa Fe County said investigators did not find any evidence that Mr. Hackman had communicated with anyone after his wife’s death.

I wonder what the outcome would have been when my Dad had his stroke/heart attack and the next door neighbor hadn't randomly showed up to check on my parents. My dad was taking care of my Mom who had Alzheimer's at the time. Spent the last 10 years or so of their lives in nursing homes after that and draining any legacy that would have been. Actually, ended up living in a state home the last year and a half. I assume with cutting SS/Medicade/Medicare there will be major bankruptcies.

Well, those people should have thought about that before becoming old, sick, and/or poor. /Republicans

I have heard about them cutting SS, but don't know any specifics. Everybody or people below a certain age, or what. They haven't changed the SS system yet, AFAIK.

Key word, yet.
Yeah, well, I haven't even heard of proposals, I don't know what's being contemplated. It may not happen, there's a potential for incredible blowback if they try to torpedo FDR's greatest legacy. I figure that the great majority of families in the USA have members who would suffer.

It's not possible to delete 2 T from the budget without touching entitlements.

:(

I decided to take care of my folks and come back stateside from my travels. Alzheimers can get really bad. My mom had it and near the end she would scream/ punch/ abuse my dad endlessly that he couldn't really sleep for 10 days and ended up having a stroke.

Had I not been there.. could easily have been much worse.. It's primarily why SS/ Medicaid/ Medicare are always my #1 issue and I would vote for anyone protecting/ expanding it.

A sad end but maybe a better end than being discovered while still alive, realizing that the woman he loved was gone and spending the rest of his days in some care facility, grieving and wondering how long before he can join her in heaven.

Blood flow to the brain is reduced in this condition. Maybe it's a secondary effect of having hypertension or cardiovascular disease or both. One way to get some protection is to consume at least one bar of 50% dark chocolate daily, even into old age as it boosts blood flow to vital organs.

I think we already have too much anecdotal evidence based beliefs going on right at the top these days, thank you.
