Gen. David Petraeus says the burning of Koran would ...

Just saw this interesting piece in CNN:

http://www.cnn.com/2010/US/09/07/florida.quran.burning/index.html?hpt=T2

in which:

Petraeus said he was concerned by the political repercussions of the church's plan.

"Even the rumor that it might take place has sparked demonstrations such as the one that took place in Kabul yesterday," he said. "Were the actual burning to take place, the safety of our soldiers and civilians would be put in jeopardy and accomplishment of the mission would be made more difficult."

....

Thousands of Indonesians gathered outside the U.S. Embassy in Jakarta, Indonesia, on Sunday to protest the planned Quran burning.
etc.

What's on my mind is that, this church, is simply representing themselves and their religious and world views. I mean why would this little church be stirring up the entire world in some way (like what Petraeus saying) is exaggerating, right? I mean this church isn't representing US of A here. Just their little church in their little spot. Not that I agree with what they are doing in form. BTW I think they want to burn Torah as well. But that's unrelated to this.

gotta agree with what you said.

its a small church in florida. it doesnt represent the ideas of the entire country.

secondly, idgaf about people on the other side of the planet complaining about this.

Isn't this a repost?

Anyway, this story epitomizes the difference between Christians and Muslims. Christians do silly crap like this and like saying that Jesus walked with dinosaurs. Pretty lame but not as lame as hordes of Muslims protesting over this crap. And we'll see if they turn violent.

"The safety of our soldiers and civilians would be put in jeopardy?" Hell, they're in jeopardy as long as they are there. Bring 'em home.

Idiots around the world get all riled up whenever they see anyone doing anything they don't approve of. Who cares? Tell them to go pound sand. The church is doing nothing illegal, end of story.

It is an isolated incident that does not even come close to representing even Christianity as a whole.

Maybe they should be told of the protestant church in Middle-Tennessee that allowed Muslims to use their church for Islamic services after NeoNazis destroyed their mosque (I can dig up a link if needed), but that does not grab the headlines like a book burning!

You're wrong about that, Islamaphobia is pretty rampant in America.

I hear the generals remarks and think to myself, whether this group goes through with burning a copy of the Koran or not, we have already conceded defeat to radical Islam.

Is this situation any different than the situation over the South Park episode about showing a depiction of Muhammad?

I kinda like Patraeus in this instance. Lets see if these crazy rightwingers want to have soldier's blood on their hands. My money is, "They don't give a shit"

You really are the densest person I have ever seen. It's not blood on "crazy rightwingers" hands any more than it is blood on the hands of that guy from Wikileaks. If anything happens halfway across the world, it is attributed to those who are committing those acts.

Do the world a favor and grow up.

Patraeus seems to disagree with you, deal with it.

We're aware that it is indeed the fault of people from that area. However, if you poke a hornets nest and your friend gets stung, your friend tells you that you're a jackass for doing that. The people choosing to burn the Korans are just as crazy as the people who will commit violence for doing it. It's due to a level of information and education. The people burning the books are crazy, but they're educated enough to focus their crazy in a certain way. Remember, in the Muslim world if someone were to try to burn a Koran, the state would stop them. So Muslims in that area of the world don't realize that even if we find something to be in bad taste in the US, we don't stop them if it's not against the law (apparantly unless they're trying build a mosque in New York).

the safety of US soldiers and civilians are put at risk over in Kabul, Iraq, and 'the other side of the planet' because of 'small church in florida'

The problem is that not only do the crazies do crap like burning the book, but there's a huge publicity circus around it. If they had done it and there wasn't this huge angst thing then there would be no potential repercussions. Unfortunately the news has made sure it's been exploited to the fullest, and there are whackjobs who do indeed go off the deep end. Now I can understand FOAD, but unfortunately Patreus has a legit concern.

Something tells me you care more about that silly little book of myths than any US soldier's life.

I use holy books as my toilet paper. It's hard to fathom that so many ignorant people still believe in these 2000+ year old myths.

Bring them home General, and sacrifice your career to do it. Or would you rather sacrifice our freedoms before your career?

something tells me you're a zionist pig that doesn't care about either.

Huh? I attack your religion that is as silly as the rest, and your knee-jerk reaction is to call me a Jew pig? We know what is on your mind, anti-semite.

Dont worry, their "holy" book is as retarded as yours. And if you wanted to burn one, I would not protest.

Great how it works here, huh?

It is an unwise and inflammatory thing of the church to do to be sure, but what do you all propose? I'm having trouble reconciling the notion that our soldiers are overseas fighting for our way of life and freedom (whether you believe that or not, it is an oft-cited reason) but that some people might think that this church should be banned from exercising their right to freedom of speech and expression -- the very thing our military claims to be fighting for overseas.

Nope. It's the same except Comedy Central was more cowardly than these Christians.

Different ideas, people, and religions are insulted and criticized every day all over the world. Islam differs in that its members will threaten you and kill you for doing it. This issue has to come to a head. I imagine in the 19th century few Muslims would ever even here of a derogatory cartoon published in Florida. Modern technology means everyone knows what other people are saying and doing. Islam can't go around having demonstrations and violence every time this happens. And free people in the West should be able to have freedom of expression without fear of violent response from Muslims. To the extent these Christians are bringing the issue to the forefront, they need to go for it.

Thank you for elegantly explaining the crux of the matter.

It would help us in freedom of expression if people were not lining up to protect a single religion. Why do they do it? Because it's violent beyond all others and they fear what it might do.

Imagine that, the western world bowing down to this threat.
