Geil 3500 Ultra Platinum and P4c OC bottleneck?

Any of you have geil 3500 ultra platinum ram and a p4 c chip? I dont see many people using 3500 ultra platinum and im wondering if the ram is why i cant seem to get a good sized overclock. I have a 2.6c with 2x256 3500 ultra platinum, slk-900u, 90 mm thermaltake smart case fan. Im stable at 240fsb, but any higher its pretty much unstable. I can post fine all the way to 249, but if i try 250, it wont post or anything, no matter what ratio or timings or vcore. Will NOT post. I think the reason it wont post above 249 is cause of the ram, but its 3500 / 433mhz ram, 250 is only 400mhz. Why the hell wont my system post at 250 fsb! Ive tried everything, read stuff all over, but have not seen a person with my problem with this ram. Do any of you have this ram, or know anything about my problem, if so, please help!

GEIL PC3500 UDC for dual channel is actually only meant to work at 217mhz 2-4-4-8 timings at 2.7-2.8v.. which is what my IC7 only can manage, my PX865PE PRO2 manages @217mhz 2-3-3-6 at 2.85v

hrmm, so i shouldnt run dual channel then eh?.... but i cant hit 250fsb/200mhz ram using a 5:4 ratio. i should be able to hit that, but i cannot. doesnt post at all.

I had 282 FSB with 5:4 using GEIL Ultra Platinum 2x256 at 2-4-3-8. Hows that? I can go as high as 242 FSB with GEIL 1:1 using 2.5-4-4-8. I cannot ask for more.

wow.... i wonder whats going on with my system... i just want 250fsb on my 2.6c.... any suggestions man?

I don't know man, you have the same motherboard. Your timings are 2-3-3-6, I use 2-3-2-6 on 200 for memory (250 FSB) in 5:4. That passed multiple Memtests so it is no sweat. I had weaker heatsink than you, Zalman CNPS 5700D-Cu. Now I just installed Zalman CNPS 7000 Cu. You should have better overclocking, perhaps your CPU is holding you back. I use 2.8V on memory and default on CPU. My power supply is a great 365 Enermax, you know one of those that cannot supply Epox with AMD but does excellent job with Intel.

hrmm.... i dunno whats going on with mine.... the only thing i can think of, is i know i did apply more then the recommended artic silver ceramique. cause i accidently pushed out a bit too much. but i dont think that would effect my oc capabilites that much.

*EDIT* - i meant to ask, what kinda cpu u got, 2.6c. And what version bios you running?

It is Malay 2.4C. It is 20 something week, I forgot really. I think Malays overclock just a tad better than Costarican ones but I am not sure about that.

I had the Geil Ultra Platinum PC3500 and could never get it to work anywhere near it's rated speed...would only work at 206 @ 2.8V with 3-4-3-7 timings...

Let me guess ... you are using N-Force 2 board?
GEIL is a potent memory but not for N-Force 2 boards.

Well, I keep on repeating this but on IS7-E I have it at 400 MHz at 2-3-2-6, rock solid, 2.8V.
With relaxed timings I get 484 MHz with the same memory. I deem it as good or better than Corsair XMS.

yeah, i tried oc'ing with the timings u suggested, but i figured id stop pushing my luck at all, and stay at a safe vcore and givein to a 500mhz oc. Im rock solid at 3.11ghz, 239fsb. 5:4 ratio, 1.6vcore, actual is about 1.55vcore. I guess im just not as lucky as some people, but hell, i'll take a 500mhz oc anyday. 🙂

damn me and my unluckiness, im staying safe at 239fsb, 3.11ghz, 1.6vcore. 1.6vcore just for 3.11ghz, BLAH!

Running single channel would probably kill your performance... the P4 NEEDS memory bandwidth, and the only way it can get it is through dual channel memory. In the days of the 533 Mhz bus, the processor was constantly starved for memory bandwidth, which is why increasing memory bandwidth created such large performance gains.

you have to give geil memory very high voltages to make it stable at hi clock speeds
and it hates low latencies

their website was mentioning something like 2.5-3.1v for the acceptable voltages
this is higher than any ddr i've seen

if you ask me the memory is kinda worthless cause most motherboards only go to 2.8v or so

True and GEIL can take it, they have the best heatspreaders of all the high end memory I've seen. And you are right, the darn Abit a$$es made 2.8V the top limit. I go up to 484 with GEIL and I bet I would be able to get 500 if I can only set the VDimm to 2.9V.

yeah, the heatspreaders on geil ram are awesome. and look awesome too. and yeah, im stuck at 2.8vdimm 🙁

I was looking elsewhere and for what I learned you cannot get anything over 2.8V for memory on IS7 and IC7. There is some risky procedure of hard modding motherboard to increase the voltage but at this point I am doing 3.3+ GHz with no sweat and have no intention of screwing up the motherboard. Maybe later, I am getting IC7 motherboard and then if that one works as good as IS7 (it should better) I might try it on IS7.
