but with the hideous insurance this money pit is now too deep.

you are correct . .. i will need to look for something much cheaper, preferably through a private seller and see if 'basic' insurance is cheaper.

I didn't think I was asking for anything other than basic and still received these crazy numbers.

10 Most-Expensive Cars to Insure

The 10 vehicles that account for the highest dollar amount of losses for insurance companies (starting with the most expensive) are:

1. Cadillac Escalade EXT 4WD
2. Subaru Impreza WRX 4WD
3. Hyundai Tiburon
4. Mitsubishi Lancer
5. Scion tC
6. Acura RSX
7. Nissan Sentra SE-R
8. Suzuki Forenza
9. Nissan Sentra/Mitsubishi Eclipse
10. Chevrolet Cobalt two-door

That's a very good point. Certain cars are statistically in more accidents. Typically this has very little to do with the car and a ton to do with the people that chose those kinds of cars. Scions are usually driven by younger people and the tC is supposed to be the 'sporty' scion. The people that chose that car statistically are just higher risks.

Call up geico and ask how much it would cost to insure a econobox boring car. There might be a pretty big difference.

Yep Scions are stupidly high to insure.

Stats say Scion tC = high school or college driver. Even if you *aren't*, welcome to higher rates.

Buy a Toyota Camry or similar. Good performance, not too big or too small and reliable. And cheaper to insure. Or if you want an American car, think along Grand Prix or any of the Chevrolet sedans out there. Again good performance and cheap to insure for a new driver.

G8 GXP would be ok, except it would be 3x the price he is paying for the Scion ... And not too sure about insurance on a V8 and new driver.

Yup it is ridiculous how much the rape you. I just got my license over a year and a half ago, was paying about $390 for 6 months. I moved about a month ago and now I am paying 600 for 6 months. Awful. I have Mercury and have not found anything that is cheaper than what I am paying. I did have an accident that was my fault, one in which I was rear-ended. Sucks!

That is pretty insane for insurance on a $13,000 car. Almost half the cost of the car for the first year of insurance? Basically that means that there's a 50-50 chance a new driver will crash in the first year of driving? I can't believe that could be even close to accurate. Geico's is still a bit more reasonable. Are you married? Can you get a joint policy with your wife? Maybe get on your parents policy?

Try a different car and see what rates you get. Try one from the least expensive to insure list just to see what they say. Tell them you are getting a used Taurus.

Also, do you have any tickets? You said no accidents, but you didn't say no tickets.

Scion TC is a coupe isn't it? They are more expensive to insure. Get a non sporty sedan with a front wheel drive. Your credit score actually has a pretty high impact on your insurance rates. I have a dumb friend that was quoted over 500 a month so I'm really not surprised by your cost estimate. Insurance rates has had a tremendous increase recently. Geico is really the cheapest you can get that has decent service. There's State Farm that may be slightly cheaper but the insurance savings just isn't worth it if you get into an accident.

..but I'm kind of surprised that you didn't consider the costs of insurance as well research potential unknown factors affecting insurance costs prior to buying a vehicle. That's just amazingly irresponsible.

Since you said "no prior vehicle accidents in the cars i've driven," I assume you have a foreign license? If so, mention that to Geico or insurance agency and negotiate.

My father got his first US license back in 1999 when we moved to US, but had a Korean license for 20+ years at that time. The insurance company initially tried to rape us, but after providing little paperworks and talking, all the driving record from Korea was considered and the rate was adjusted. It may not be your case, but you should try if so.

in my experience, people that learn to drive later in life are the worst drivers. they never seem to be comfortable on the road. anyways, i didnt see the type of car you are purchasing, but that could a huge factor also. you cant change your driving history, but you can change your car choice.

edit, nvm see your update now. dont know what to say.

State Farm has always been absolutely spectacular to deal with for me. And, being a mutual company, I will occasionally receive dividend checks from them during periods in which they run a surplus over projected losses. They've never given my any reason at all to complain and I would recommend them strongly.

Female cars are usually cheaper to insure.
