GeForceFX 5900 or Radeon 9800 Pro?

I have the 9800 Pro [128MB version), should I try to trade it with somebody for the FX 5900 [non Ultra, 128MB version]? Based on performance, which is better (I play FPS, and that's about it)? As far as other things are concerned (drivers, image quality, etc.) I've owned 2 nVidia cards from the GeForce4 line and 2 ATi cards from the 9xxx line (9700 Pro, 9800 Pro) so I have a fair idea of those differences.

Thanks in advance

LOL.

So (Atif) is anything wrong with the ATI that you want to spend money to trade sideways (not really up) to the fx?

I'm a nvidia user since the TNT days and using a gf3 right now, but the ATI is at least a rough equivalent to the 5900 -- better on some benchmarks, worse on others (though mostly ones using stock demos nvidia may have cheatimised for).

Stay with the 9800P if you don't have problems. It's slightly faster overall now, and will be faster in the future.

No I don't have any problems with it, I'm just trying to gauge the value of my purchase 🙂

Peace

Stick with the 9800Pro - better AA/AF performance. More overclockable!! Running your 9800Pro @ 450/370 will definately offer better performance than any 5900!!

If you're not having problems with the 9800 Pro then keep it. It's more comparable to a FX5900 Ultra. If you're having compatability or driver issues with any games you're trying to play, then by all means, trade it away. nVidia driver issues are rare, which is why I've always been hesitant to switch to ATI.

Stick with the 9800 Pro. BTW... tomshardware just did a review on these video cards, so you might wanna check that out for reference.

Yeah, I'm going to recommend steering clear of THG for 3D card advice. Case in point: their recent "VGA Roundup" that considers a 5600 their "editor's choice."

True, but based on a very select group of benchmarks. Specifically, ones that are nVidia-slanted, IMO.

Granted, MSI has nice bundles and packaging, and their selection of cards was limited. I prefer speed and IQ over fluff, though, and I think a greater range of benchmarks would have shown the 9600P as faster than a 5600, thus complicating the choice b/w a feature-packed 5600 and a faster 9600P.

I expect boxorz roxoring for $150+, though. 😉 Actually, BuyXtremeGear has a Gainward 5600 for only $123, which is a surprisingly good price. I think it's a tough call b/w a $120 5600 or 4200.

THG has 5900 > 9800pro - convincing (if thg can be "convincing" anyone these days)
digit-life has 9800pro > 5900 - convincing
Hard|OCP has 9800pro > 5900 - close except with high AA/AF

Coul ddo with new benchmark roundup at anandtech, just this one plus the 5900....

I'll go for the the smaller and slightly better Radeon 9800 Pro
the 5900 FX seem so heavy and bulky with the card practically covered with Heat Sink and Fan
and 2 full slots...instead of one 🙂 LOL

however, I think Nvidia still have the driver advantage...

I have one as well, stick with it, great card and very future proof for you. Price is getting lower every day as well for anyone out there considering it.

I'd keep the 9800 pro. Not only ATI has better colors and anisontropic filtering quality, but it's also more quiet, cool (in terms of temperature), and fast card. Fans on gf fx are colossal, and sound like a goddamn airplane. 5900 ultra on the other hand is good because of pure speed (100 fps in doom 3).

Uhhh, you're quoting results from a game that has yet to be released in final commercial form. That isn't a good way to judge speed. I think both cards will end up running it great, but I'd stick with the 9800 pro which seems to come out equal to the fx5900 ultra in almost all test. One thing to whoever was talking about the fx5900 taking up so much room, one of the reasons is that they have cooling on the RAM, which is definetely a boon for OC'ing.

How can anyone advise to buy a fx 5900. He's thinking about trading the 9800 PRO for a fx 5900 NON-Ultra. The fx 5900 ultra and 9800 pro are good competitors, but the fx 5900 NON-ultra doesn't stand a chance. The non-ultra is more compareable to the non-pro.
