Geforce4 vs ATI Radeon - My experiences

Ok, I had a Geforce2 Pro. Decided it was time to upgrade. Checked things out and although I've been burned by ATI long ago decided to give em a try. Things went well. Loved the speed increase. Then I fired up Dark Age of Camelot which I play in windowed mode. It was now unplayable. I panicked. One of the reasons I'd avoided ATI for so long was compatibility troubles and lack of good support.

So I took the ATI Radeon 9700 Pro back and got a Geforce4 TI 4600. They were both the same price. I liked the VIVO capabilities and all. I'm running the latest drivers of course. For some reason things seem to be slower than with the ATI though. I'm talking even in 2D.

So now I'm thinking about getting that 9700 Pro back but I want to make sure that this speed I'm noticing isn't because of something I'm doing like the default settings are not the optimal for performance or something.

So any advice? Try to tweak the settings? If so which ones? Or just go with the ATI Radeon 9700 Pro even though I've already had one game I play not work well with it?

the geforce4 seems slower because..........it IS slower!

check out the radeon 9800 pro review at guru3d.com
they include benchmarks of the radeon 9700 pro and the geforce4.

did u try the ati catalyst 3.2 drivers? supposedly they fixed a lot of games, but broke some others too.
try 3.1 drivers also.

also, did u do a format before switching cards?

Yeah when I first tried out the Radeon I downloaded the 3.1 because I hadn't seen the 3.2. Then later I upgraded. In fact the upgrade was because in windowed mode it was unplayable I checked and when I saw newer drivers I tried those but didn't help. So I'm really leaning now towards returning it. Heh its been like 3 days since I returned it the first time. This time though I will probably stick with it. Wasn't like I couldn't play the game just that the windowed mode of that game sucked and it is made to work with Nvidia chips.

Maybe you should try some unofficial driver which does even a better job then the ATi official. It's known as the Omega driver and pretty popular around other threads not this one though. No idea. Anyway www.omegacorner.com

Well I'm back to running an ATI Radeon. I think I'll just stick it out this time for better or worse. Only had one compatibility problem and that was only with one of it's not so well implemented features.
