Geforce4 MX440 - do I really need the fan on it?

Yes, yes.. I know that the card is a piece of crap... My GF2 GTS died, so I needed this as a stop-gap until next month when I go buy my 4600..

So, in the meantime, I am wondering, if I am not overclocking the carrd or the system at all, is the fan really needed on the MX? I ask because the fan that is on it right now (an Abit Siluro MX440) really sucks ass. It whines and is about the loudest thing in my box. If it would be alright, I would love to just disconnect it.

hehe ya u can take it off. wont hurt anything. Actually my Geforce 4 ti 4600 when i first got it came with a dead fan. tho my computer ran fine and didnt notice it til i looked. i returned it tho.

and thats a GEFORCE 4 TI 4600.

MX is lower clocked so yes u should be able to. if u cant it shouldnt fry it or anything. just games my crash and maybe even windows. if that happens just put fan back on

for GF4, I suggest you keep the fan on.

However, as a Radeon user, I unplugged fans on ALL of my Radeons (2 AIW Radeon, 1 Radeon PCI). NO problem so far after three months. Casual CS playing. Mostly non gaming.

Those fans SUCKS. tiny size big noise.

I opened the case of my friends machine to find that the Heatsink had fallen off the Geforce2 MX card and had bonded itself to the bottom of the case, seemed to running stable with nothing on it, I put it back on anyway but I suspect it will call off, just compound holding it on!

Well, if you do not want a fan, buy one of those Zalman special VGA card heatsinks. They are big and from copper, and they claim no fan is needed regardless what card you have. Just take a look at those....

The GF4MX aren't that bad, slow nor cool (as in chilly). They are supped up GF2TI cards, not GF2MX cards and as such the GF4MX440 clocks of 270/400 are higher than a GF2TI and considerably higher than a GF2MX400 at 200/166! You could try it, but you should still get $50 for your card 2nd hand and it prob will die. Try replacing the fan on it, but I'd suggest sticking it out until you get your GF4. BTW, what CPU are you running?

The GF2MX cards could run without a fan, although most came with one (so they don't always put them on out of necessity Instagib).

You could underclock it like Masterc suggests, it's really the core that heats up so 270 down to 200 may do it, but I think it runs at full speed until you hit Windows anyway.

laugh, the original Radeons were notorious for being under-clocked.

you dont really need a fan, but you'll probably need a larger heatsink. the vision tek gf 4 mx440 doesnt have a fan .
