I'm helping a friend buy a system this week and she's willing to give me a GeForce3 for my effort. But I have a quandry ....

Right now I'm running a Duron 750, Diamond Viper II, 128MB RAM, SB Live! Value, no DVD, no CDRW ...

For the price of a GeForce3, I can get a 1.4 Athlon, 256MB RAM, 16x10x40 CDRW, AS2 Thermal Paste, bigger and better HSF, 3COM 10/100 NIC and a Gainward GeForce2 Pro/450 ...

Do I get just the card or do I get the package of stuff?

Thanks for your help in advance....

I would certainly not get the GF3.

But supposedly the GeForce3 Ti200 (aka GF3MX) is going to be available tommorow.

It should perform similiarly to a GF2 with GF3 feature set, and cost a bunch less.

Dont get the Geforce 3. I would go with the system
With your current system, your CPU is going to be a bottle neck.

uhmm...your prics don't add up i dont think

1.4 Athlon $115
Additional 128 megs of RAM $20
16x10x40 CDRW - $90
AS2 - $10
HSF - $30
3com NIC - $30
Geforce 2 Pro - $150

Total: ~$445

Geforce3's go for under $300, and the price will drop when the new Geforce3s come out..

Regardless, the whole new system would be better than a Geforce3

Go for the whole package. A Geforce2 Pro is still going to be plenty fast for whatever you have to throw at it.

On a side note, you have a very generous friend. If my friends gave me high end hardware every time I helped them with their computers, I would have an all SCSI, dual everything rig by now. :)

You're right about it not adding up, I forgot to add that I was going to get an Asus Deluxe model and that I was going to put in about $75 out of pocket ...

Her offering a Geforce3 card just blows me away.... hehe ...

Thanks for all the continued advice... seems pretty clear as to what I should do... hehe ...

Jeez, wish I had people like this. I usually get a cheap lunch for putting together an entire system.

Then again, as long as I don't have to install programs other than the OS, I'm fine. Building the system takes 20-30 mins max then installing programs takes a few hours.
