<< Wow, only $600? I'm there, dude! >>

You're gonna have to wait in line, cause I'm there first ;)

I laugh at anyone with a P4/GF3 machine.

What do you expect from a Junior, LXI?

Spellcheck would be great, to bad you cant make it DEFAULT. As you progress through your status on the forums, you then have the option to disable.

Venomous, what exactly does Junior vs Senior status have to do with spelling?

They can't justify the prices on the cost of DDR memory now. Crucial is selling 256mb sticks of DDR RAM for $90, so most of the cost for a GeForce 2 or 3 is the nVidia chip.

The death of 3dfx is really going to hurt people in the pocketbook this year.

Thats also retail at CompUSA, and it isn't exactly on the shelves. CompUSA has always been expensive in my experience. You guys act like its your RIGHT to own the best for the cheapest price. Almost every other market has product ranging from cheap to very expensive.

There is also a higher cost on extremelly fast DDR memory used on these cards, this memory is 500Mhz DDR, PC2100 is 266Mhz DDR. Its not like its mass produced in the quantites of SDRAM, about the only thing using this memory IS the GeForce 3.

CompUSA's margin on this card is probably under 10%. 3-5% is standard in the computer retail business. I don't expect to see this card discounted very heavily until the end of the year.

And sure this memory is more expensive than PC2100 but it's not the most expensive part on the card, not by far; it's that nVidia chip and they can charge for it because they know they have the high-end gamers by the short hairs now.

I paid $300 retail for my GeForce DDR when it was introduced over a year ago, when it was the best card around. Now the price point for the best has doubled in a year.

nVidia is doing the same thing that Intel was doing before AMD got its act together and became competitive: raping and pillaging. Who's gonna stop them?

:disgust:

Actually CompUSA still sells the GeForce 2 Ultra for $499.... Herc is usually expensive, and so is CompUSA.
The card will probably start at $480 to $520 on price watch.

Not to rain on your parade (refer to guys who want to rush out and buy a $600 video card), but that nice brand new card will not do anything more for you than the older Geforce cards. I give you some really intelligent information that if processed right might save you some money. Number one speed is almost overkill now with graphics cards. People brag about their 90 fps (frames per second) but what they dont realize is that the human eye can't see the difference past 60 fps. So who care's if your card can do a million fps, you wont notice the difference! Number two, the nice brand new features like T&L and Bump Mapping are not yet main stream. Only a handful of programs out there have these features, where most of them were written as update patches, not origanally placed in the code until after games release. Number three, if you rush out to buy every new video card the day it hits the shelf, the dam price will go up. (Economics 101 Supply and Demand). If you let the cards sit on the shelf, NVIDIA will have to reduce their profit thereby making the cards more affordable. The cost to manufacture these cards is far less than $200, more like $80 (rough estimate). So NVIDIA is making about $300 to $400 prophit. In summary, you are rushing out to buy a $600 video card which will not make a noticeable difference for at least a year to two years, at which time the same card will now cost around $200. Their will be a better card out in 6 months which will also be not much different than the card you have. Reason for all this is the programers are writing programs for today's Hardware spec's not the future. Most game programs take over a year to write. Just some food for thought!

CompUSA's cost on the card is $500, so the $100 markup is pretty significant.
