Geforce2MX by Creative Labs... how good/bad?

Posted in General as well... normally I don't post in two areas, but I need lots of quick responses... :Q

I have an ELSA Geforce DDR card that someone is offering me a Creative Labs Geforce2MX card *AND* Voodoo3-2000PCI in trade for...
Now that sounds good, doesn't it? :) How bad is the CL MX card? I know it's a little slower than the SDR counterparts but that won't make much difference with my Celeron 450A and I can trade one of the two cards for a CPU upgrade or something...

I need to decide by tomorrow... educated opinions please!

If I'm not mistaken, the CL MX uses DDR based memory. But because of it's 64 bit data bus path's, the overall effect is roughly the same speed as SDR give or take 5% of performance.

Marketing ploy to make it look faster than it is ;)

The "deal" doesn't feel right to me... I think I'll stick with the DDR unless I get a local trade offer for a Radeon or V5 like I'd originally asked.
Did you guys know there's only maybe ONE AnnihilatorMX review out there? I haven't even found it yet... :Q

Since 2D is important to me, I think going to CL might be a bad move...
And for anyone who's been following my epic video card story, Onvia stalled in their response to my email request for a return and they said it was "over 15 days, sorry."
I not have this ELSA card permanently unless a Canadian wishes to trade... no video cards over the border... I learned that lesson the hard way.

I wouldn't get it. If I was to get a GF2MX it would be SDR. Like Greaser said, it has a 64bit data path and because of some ineffiency (sp?) of DDR ram, it is about 5% slower than a equivalent SDR card.

Elsa cards have good 2D Performence, so I would either stick with what you have of get an Elsa GeForce 2 MX or GTS depending on your budget.

I agree with all of you... I'm actually enjoying the high-res power of the DDR... makes for nice FSAA as well. :) I only wish it were a GTS, but I can't complain. $120US went a long way for this (~185 Canadian...) All those US sites only cater to Americans so I couldn't get in on the ELSA Gladiac GTS deal at around $130US.

I have no complaints... Half-Life looks very nice at 1024x768x32 OpenGL with 1.5 FSAA active. Very nice framerates, even on my Cel450A. I might experiment with the highest resolution without FSAA to get a little better framerate.
Unless someone offered me the Radeon to trade (within Canada) I won't let this baby go. :)
Not even for a pretty good deal of $300 worth of equipment to my $200. (Then I have the hassle of a less impressive video card, and selling the Voodoo....
Now if he offered me the Creative card plus the $70 he was asking for the card.... naw... still not worth it. (Even if it means that I'd only be "paying" $120Can for that card.)
Now if someone offered me a P3-700+ worth more than my card, I'd consider it. :p
Aw forget it... I have stomach flu and can't think straight.
g'night. :D

How come this guy is so desperate for your Geforce, the Elsa Geforce's performence should be fairly comprable to that Creative Geforce 2MX, although it may be better in the higher resolutions of course.

If you do consider his offer, you will need to consider how much you will notice the performence differences, I would take a look at the nvidia geforce mx review and compare the benchmarks with your current card.

There is the 2nd gen t&l engine and a few other bits on the creative card, it is the cheapest geforce 2mx around so you can't expect huge things from it i suppose.

Because my CPU is what's holding me back, high-resolution (or FSAA) is "almost free". If I moved to the slower of the MXes over my very nice DDR, I'd have fuzzy text and slower speed (although not by much.)

I don't like it... it's either a V5 or a Radeon, or I keep my card. :)

I have the CL GeForce2MX DDR card and a Celeron 300@450 w/ 64mb ram. At 800x600 I get 60fps pretty much constant. Quake 3 @ 800x600 with all detail cranked way up is about 60fps on the timedemo demo1. Its a damn good card but I keep hearing that the best choice is the Hercules Prophet II MX. I think the difference is minimal from card to card. Personally I wish I hag gone with the LeadTek GF2MX card because it has the TwinView support (DoH!) . Just my Thoughts
