GeForce2 Ultra To Be Delayed

According to some unofficial info, NVIDIA?s method of increasing its graphics accelerators? performance by overclocking memory chips started failing. And the first one to suffer from it appeared GeForce2 Ultra. The memory manufacturers turned out unable to supply the required amount of DDR SDRAM memory chips working at 460MHz. As a result, we haven?t yet seen any GeForce2 Ultra graphics cards even though they had been promised to come out in September already. And only in the end of October two graphics cards manufacturers, Creative and Hercules, will finally be able to start shipping the first cards built on this notorious chipset, though still in very limited quantities. As for the other graphics cards manufacturers, they appeared absolutely forgotten and won?t start the production of their GeForce2 Ultra graphics cards in the near future. even ASUS got into a very unpleasant situation in this respect, according to PC Rave, which reports that the launching of ASUS GeForce2 Ultra was moved to end November or even later date.
However, the memory chips shortage is supposed not to tell on the NV20 launching, because more progressive technologies used in it make up for the slower memory than in GeForce2 Ultra. That?s why the coming of a newer chipset may simply wreck GeForce2 Ultra sales.

It's a supply problem not a design problem... look at palms, shortage due to lack of flash memory and screens, price shot up, same thing here.. if you were making a car and promised it was coming out by next week except all the firestone tires were being recalled what can you do but delay.. i don't think theres a lot of manufacture that can crank out those 460Mhz ddr memory in mass production since they're pretty new.

Yeah. I kinda hate to see Nvidia slide like that. Hopefully they'll turn around and won't pull an "Intel" (my word for paper-launch) again.....

Oh, it'll happen again. Intentionlly or not nvidia is prone to that scam as easily as other companies.

As for this delay, no biggie. I didn't plan to buy one of these beasties anyway. And what games to be released this year actually tap the potential of a GTS let alone an Ultra???

When 3dfx announced delays because TSMC shorted them on VSA chips, people jumped all over 3dfx because of it. When it happens to nVidia, nobody bats an eyelash. Pfffttt

Hey it happens to the best of them. 3dfx's future gets brighter and brighter every day. :p

Yeah, phantom AGP support -- not that it really matters anyway;)

Seems to me that the Ultra wont be here, so nVidia will be forced to release the nv20 sooner than expected. They cant have GeForce2GTS to compete with Voodoo5 6000, so they will probably release NV20, or GeForce3. If they do that than it will trash 3dfx.

Like KnightBreed, I find it odd that when nVidia slips up and has a delay it's accepted but when Intel or 3dfx have the same problem they get trashed. All three companies make excellent products (depending on your needs) but for some reason Intel and 3dfx do not have the same product loyalty of nVidia. Why?

hmm... so guess who will rant about this in his next interview? ;)

hint: under any normal situations he would have been fired long time ago.

I smell a Bubba coming on...wait a sec, Voodoo Extreme is supposed to be back online tomorrow (from what I hear). Maybe an interview with Bubba trash talking nVidia will be the highlight of their rebirth! :D

Ultra to be released in Singapore Wednesday

Conflicting reports here, other websites are saying end of the week or next week for retail release in the US/Canada.

OTOH Robor, why do people believe rumors about nVidia problems on the drop of a hat? ;) I think your looking for a conspiracy where there is none, some people just like different companies. As much as people say this forum is nVidia biased I sure see a lot of 3dfx "zealots" or ATI fans.

Personally I like nVidia over 3dfx, but ATI and Matrox have my respect. I feel nVidia is a bit more likely to get loyalty then 3dfx, because of the products they have made vs 3dfx. Regardless of how good their products are you can't argue that 3dfx makes cards for the "here & now" with less future "helping" features.

We Nvidia fans don't biotch when Nvidia misses a product cycle, because, oh, their product is faster, and um, they have NOT missed a cycle until now...

The V5 was how late? Where in |-|311 was the V4? V5 6K hahahahhahhahahahaaa

My impressions:

3dfx fans are more hardcore. They are the people that will wait out for 3dfx's next product regardless if it is the slowest or fastest on the market. They also are first to defend 3dfx (with flames when necessary) when somebody makes an insulting remark toward 3dfx. I rarely see a 3dfx "zombie" outright start flame wars, but I always see them defend 3dfx until their dying breath.

nVidia doesn't have zealots. If you are not a 3dfx zealot, you are an anti-3dfx zealot. These are the people that take any opportunity they can to release their anger on the fathers of 3d. Anti-3dfx zealots seem more aggressive as well. Hardware is a prime example. He owns a Radeon card (correct?) but he's posted countless threads bashing 3dfx for anything, be it delays, performance, etc..

Its pretty much 3dfx Vs Everybody else :p

Robor:

<< All three companies make excellent products (depending on your needs) >>

I agree completely.

Fozzie:
If you remember they released the SDR Geforce in Singapore first, then the rest of the world a few weeks later. My bet is nVidia will release the Ultra and 3dfx will release the 6000 about a week before Comdex (start of November).

RGN,

<< they have NOT missed a cycle until now... >>

Not quite right. They missed their product cycle with the original TNT. It was delayed and then introduced with lower specs than originally announced. Since then and until now, though, they have been flawless.

The Hardware situation confuses me;) First he was die-hard for nVidia and everyone else could kiss his ass. He always made a point to prove how inferior 3dfx was.

Then the Radeon came around and he started bashing both nVidia and 3dfx. I don't know what his position is now

"It's a supply problem not a design problem.."

heh.. my fellow 3dfx defenders have pointed that out!

actually, I wouldn't be surprised if this was PARTLY true. remember, it's not NVIDIA who makes the card, it's the manufacturers that order the SDRAM. so expect SOME nVidia GTS Ultra's out, but at an extremely high price (high demand, low availability).

in fact, I wouldn't be surprised if some companies get kindof pissed at someone, becuase they have all these nVidia chips sitting here with little to no DDR SDRAM at the speed nVidia specifies.

maybe we could see them use those chips in lower cost versions with 200mhz DDR SDRAM?
