Is their really that much difference between the GTS @ 32mg ram or the Generic Pro @ 64mg ram? According to Sharky's data the 32mg GTS provided a frame rate of 91 using QuakeIII Arena Max 1024x768 on a 1 gig PIII. Switching out the GTS for a PRO 64mg caused the frame rate to drop to 90!!!!!!

Once the graphics got over the the above scan rate then the 64mg began to edge forward to ~ 65 fps (64mg) vs. ~ 53.4 fps (32mg GTS) but this was @ 1280x 1024!

How many folks actually have monitors large enough to handle this resolution?

So does a $140. MSI Geforce2 GTS @ 32megs sound so bad? $60 bucks is $60. bucks!

Really depends on if you want max quality and high fps. I like to run at 1024x768 32 bit with everything on hq. If you're looking for a steal, the 32mb GTS you were talking about is it. If you're looking for that extra edge in fps (and still a steal), the Pro at $200 is the way to go. Plus you can overclock this card to near-Ultra levels and some guys have gotten it to run faster than the Ultra factory clock speeds. Gotta tell ya, I've been running this card now for a while and it's yet to glitch on me and game play is super-smooth. One of the best bargains I ever took advantage of, and the price at $200 shipped is still the lowest after several weeks. Needless to say, I'm VERY content with this purchase :D

I guess it depends on your future plans as well. I personally run all games at 1280x124 or 1600x1200, so I do need a higher end card. If you don't have any plans in the future to run at higher resolutions then you don't need the pro. But if you like to use FSAA or may run at higher res later on then the pro probably does make more sense. I also look at the resale value. I like to sell my components as soon as I replace them. I try to purchase items that have a better resale value potential as well.

hey guys.. i bought this card last week.. and I have just one little problem with it...

Why won't the card run at resolutions higher than 640 by 480 in TV mode??? It won't even allow 640 by 480 at 256 color.. it runs fine on my 19 inch tv..

thx for any advice in advance.

That is because NO video card outputs to tv at higher than 640x480. NTSC televisions do not scan any higher than 60hz and at this resolution, which is why if you attempt to output at a higher one it just turns into junk.

HDTVs and some other flat screen teles support higher resolutions, but if you're just using an old tube tv then you won't get any better. and until these proliferate more, then you won't see many video cards that will output higher, either.

And, btw, i got this card a few weeks ago, when this thread originally posted. I must say that I've been happy with it so far, although it is quite outmatching my k6-2 550 at the present, and i'm not so happy with the load times for Counter-Strike (takes longer than it did on my Voodoo3 3000), but when i get my 1gig tbird this week, i'm sure things will even out some. ;)

and you guys wouldn't BELIEVE my 3dmarks with this thing *cough*310*cough* =9

My old Creative TNT2 Ultra could output at 800x600.

I had no problem outputting to my TV with 800x600x32 using this card. I am running nvidia reference driver v6.50, dunno if that matters though.

I still prefer to use 640x480 to my TV, because they shrink the size of the screen a little bit (narrower) when in 800x600.

When I switched to the Output Device tab, I am able to use the following 6 options for output resolution:

640x480 256
640x480 16-bit
640x480 32-bit
800x600 256
800x600 16-bit
800x600 32-bit

I found 640x480 32-bit to be the best option for my sony wega. 800x600 makes the screen narrower, thus smaller, and text becomes unreadable.

Have you guys been overclocking this card? If yes, what program have you used to overclock it, and what driver version are you using?

This is the program I use to overclock my card (now at 215/475). I am using nvidia reference driver v6.50, anything other than this version gives me either slower framerate or unstable/corrupted video.

Geforce TweakUtil

The other popular overclocking utility is called nvmax, you can find it at www.nvmax.com.

Found another place with the card.

Check out www.mwave.com

They have card for same price. My order came to 214.29 with 2 day shipping. I called and was told if I ordered today, which I did, it would ship out monday. Definitally worth the money to not get the MSI which isnt really a pro.

Garrett.

mastarecoil:

Is'nt Newegg and MWAVE the same store?

I saw it to at MWAVE but wanted the free shipping and handling!
(Since I live in Canada, I had to use BorderFree and their shipping was to high with MWAVE) :)

I second this, just bought a RADEON VIVO 64MB RETAIL and running it under windows 2000 (replaced a elsa gladiac gts)..

Big mistake under win2000. The drivers for this thing just plain sucks.. I even tried the latest one from ATI's website (3116) and still the same problem.. I'm not sure but it seems to have problems with the ATHLON mainboards..

I have an A7V133, 1GH athlon, sblive, crucial ram, the works, system is not overclocked..

via 4.29 4in1 installed
amd athlon/duron patch (minReg...)
microsoft via patch
SP1

this thing can't even run 3dmark2001 without locking up.. Plus it seems the vertex shader is only 0.5 compliant, meaning that any game using vertex shading under dx8 won't be able to make use of it..

Oh well.. ati never again..

>If you're using Win2K or planning on it, steer far clear of the Ati. As for a Geforce Pro for 200 bucks, it probably isn't as future proof as the Ati is , but it will give you more fun right now and be easier to install. Something else I noticed is that the Ati's under Win98 actually do better than Geforce Pro's with certain game negines like Unreal Tournament. In my case, that's pretty much the only 3d game I play, so I was considering the VIVO. If you are planning on the VIVO though, consider the Radeon LE on newegg with TV-out. I'm assuming here that it's the same as the Radeon LE , jsut with some Tv chip. The TV-out won't be as nice as the VIVO 64MB, but you may not care. The TV-in on the vivo is composite only, so for the difference in price, you could buy a nice Tv-tuner card and get the whole shebang, with the only real difference being (Radeon LE overclocked) the extra RAM on the card.

just got my card today....works perfectly w/o any lock-up so far. I'm using the 7.58 drivers under Win2k and the TV out allows for 1024x768...of course it's not working well under that resolution on my TV tho...800x600 seems to be the highest, but I personally prefer 640x480 to play my DIVX anime/movies =)

Just received this card from Newegg, to replace my V6600SDR, my card was made by inno3d, sporting the same specs as the 3dpower model. It appears to be a decent card thus far but there are 2 quality issues: (1) the RAMDAC is 350mhz but the 2d is really blurry at anything above 1024x768, and i have noticed ghost like images in MS word and IE5 when viewing text. A quick swap to my V6600 and the problem disappears leaving me to believe that cheap components are to blame. (2) using the 6.50 reference drivers and below causes brief corruption in direct3d (Roguespear 3dmark99,00,01 and CS D3d.) and this doesnot occur in OPENGL at all. installing NED v.10.50 and higher cleared this though.but my FPS is lower with the newer NED's. The Tvout is as good as ATI (they have pretty good tvout quality) and it appears that the card maybe manufactured by leadtek (the reference design and color scheme as well as the PCB silkscreens, and memory brand used ELITEMT -5) which is a good thing. All in all it is an excellent deal but if you are serious about text quality, then maybe this deal is to be avoided. It is possible that the 3Dpower does not exhibit the 2d image blur that I have seen (anyone know?).and to cap it off, the card hit 240/475 stable as stock speed (using a tennmax lasagna cooler). The ram does get warm but adding sinks will probably do jack for the OC as it is already pretty high.

I have mine running at 1600x1200 and find the text to be fine. I am using BNC cables on my sony.

I would tend to agree with ambushy, I think this card has some quality components on it. I'm running it on an ASUS P2B (BX) board with a celeron 566 overclocked to 933. I've overclocked it to Ultra specs and had it running just fine. It replaced a TNT2 Ultra and with games like Serious Sam and Quake 3 Arena you can go much higher with this card and still maintain framerates. I was running Demo 1 of Q3A at "Custom" settings at 1024x768 with my Ultra and getting about 59fps. I went to Q3A's high quality settings (which switches the res to 800x600) and then upped the res back to 1024x768 and got 95fps. Not bad for a simple video card switch.

A friend of mine just replaced his GeForce with this card and is very happy as well. He is overclocking his to Ultra specs as well.

As for XGamer's comment: "You guys would be fools to buy this." it's my opinion that he "Used" to be a gamer?? Because if you take a look at commemoratives's link to the comparison of framerates for these cards it's not that way today. :)

It's a TomsHardware article that clearly shows these cards trounce an MX at higher resolutions.

Sorry, I haven't tried the TV out. I had it on my Ultra and never got around to using it w/that card either.

Just my 2cents.

wow, why the price increase? Well, if you don't have one already, you may want to wait until the the gf3's come out, then the price on these will really drop
