Geforce2 MX which one?

Ok, I am looking to upgrade from my V3 2000 to an MX. I want to know what everyone thinks is the best one. Keep in mind that I would like to spend only around $100. I dont need dual outs either. Also any advice on where to get the card from. Thanks all.

I was actually coming here to ask about the MX as well and saw this post. I just got a PC World thing in my Email and they rated the CardExpert GeForce2 MX (from www.gainward.com) as their Best Buy for 3d Video cards. They have it listed at $129.

My question (and maybe I'll need to start a new thread) is how does this card compare to my crappy little TNT2 Vanta card. I think it should be a ton better (I might even have the Vanta LT) but I hadn't heard of the MX until today. Any feedback would be much appreciated.

I like my A-Open Geforce 2 MX. Comes with a nice heatsink installed and WinDVD software. Available for $99 plus shipping multiwave. The Geforce 2 MX will seriously outperform a TNT2 Ultra, much less a Vanta. It offered a very nice improvement over my old Voodoo 3 3000 as well.

If you're really on a tight budget, consider the Inno3D Tornado GeForce2 MX which has a review just right about here.

With a budget of $ 100, I'd go with the Inno3D card. Its got a Fan/Heatsink and retails for $ 109 at http://www.bunta.com/ I'd go with the retail version because it comes bundled with MadOnion's 3D Mark 2000, Adobe Photodeluxe lite, WinDVD 2000 & two crappy 3D rally games.

For a Hundred bucks I would get the Creative Labs Annihilator GeForce2MX with 32megs DDR.
Same chipset as the Tornado, but with Double Data RAM.
The DDR performance increase is around 20% and up!!!!

Don't get the DDR board. Tt uses DDR memory, but only a 64 bit bus. All the other cards use SDR memory and a 128 bus. The larger bussed normal sdram is faster than the ddr ram.

btw some1 correct me if i'm worng on any of this.

Also one would assume that the ddr would be cheaper. Altho it's moree expencive ram, they only have to trace 1/2 of the bus and there for, save money.

yes i think you are wrong althought creative uses 64 bit ram but remember is ddr total comes to 128bit

This topic has been discussed a hundred times before, but here it is again, paraphrased:

Creative Geforce2 MX using DDR has only a 64-bit path. The DDR ram may be twice the speed but it's also clocked lower. The end result is performance crippled by BOTH the 64-bit path AND the slower clocked DDR ram. End result? The Annihilator MX card is about 20% SLOWER than a typical SDR MX card.

If it's all you can get and significantly less expensive, then it's not a big deal. You're better off spending a little more and getting a full-blown GF2 *GTS* card though. $30-40 well spent for a card almost double the speed at higher resolutions. It'll last you a good long time.

Aim for ELSA or Visiontek brands if you want crisp 2D at higher-than-1024x768 resolutions. (Big monitors especially...)

While the Creative card may be a little slower than the other Geforce 2 MX cards, it is still a decent budget video solution. I would not totally reject it. It offers decent 2D and good 3D acceleration. I haven't noticed ANY compatibility issues with games with the Annihilator 2 MX DDR. My A-Open card has issues with Rogue Squadron 3D, yet the Creative runs it just fine. It is very easy to overclock the annihilator to 314 MHz on the ram to help get it closer to the 166 MHZ SDR card's performance.

Why does everyone keep saying to get the Hercules board. The original poster said to keep the price at $100 and I haven't seen the Herc board under $150 - $170 or more. There is a board from gainward http://www.gainward.com/products/geforce2mx.htm
and it retailes for curretly around $97 at MixPC http://www.mixpc.com/Merchant/index.htm

That's the board I'm leaning towards unless anyone knows anything bad about it. *shrug*

Don't order from the POS site, MixPC. They kept me waiting over a month for a CardEx videocard that said in stock. All I got was BS when I kept calling to find out status. Beware this place. They have another site that looks the same under another name also that I forget, but you will recognize if you've been to MixPC's site.
