GeForce2 GTS worth the upgrade to GeForce3 Ti200?

I have an Abit Siluro 64MB GeForce2 GTS that is a great card (230/400 without a problem).

However, with the GF4 coming out, I figured I should be able to pick up a GF3 Ti200 cheap soon.

Is it going to be worth the $$$ to get one, or not?

I am also considering a Radeon 8500LE, but I was less than impressed with ATI driver support when I had my 32mb Radeon LE.

I would wait for the geforce4s prices to drop. But it all depends on what you do, in almost all cases the geforce3 will outperform your card, but how much depends on what games you play and what resolution/detail level you play them at.

you can get a geforce3 ti200 right now for like $89 in the gateway accessory store. Go for it man! check it out but you have to get it ordered by the 28th

If not for the Geforce4 coming out I would say yes it's worth the upgrade. I noticed quite a difference with the Geforce3 over my old Creative GTS card. The frame rates are smoother (not just faster) and the Geforce3 supports more features and likes higher-res. Games like Medal of Honor and F12001 are more enjoyable. If you plan on playing the newer games coming out than I would say patiently wait til you need it and buy the best sub $250 card you can get. I really think you're going to see the Geforce3's become almost impossible to get... cause they're just too high end to sell as cheap as the MX cards and so on. I think companies are stuck between a rock and a hard place with pricing, part of the reason the Ti4200(?) is being delayed. There has to be a line between budget, performance, and high performance cards. All I know is it's a waste to spend $350+ on a card that's going to be under $200 within a year. Remember when the Geforce2 Ultra debuted in August or so of 2000... it was $500. I'm glad I didn't drop that kind of money on a card that was simply faster with absolutely no new features from my GTS I paid $239 for just 6 months prior.

I like to remind myself that at some point I WILL upgrade this brand new card at some point, so why should I spend an arm and a leg for it?

As "tsnyder" said, i agree with his thought of the graphics-card developers having difficulties adjusting the prices on the soon to be older generations of graphic-cards, especially the G3's. There is a significant performance leap from the G2's and the G3's and with the G3's being high end graph-cards the prices cant be too low, or too high of course. I have heard rumours i havnt been able to confirm yet, that with the release of the next generation GeForce cards (the G4's) the G3's will go out of production therein eliminating the problem of having to adjust the prices and instead more or less forcing the buyers to get a G4 instead.
This is just what ive heard and so it shouldnt be taken too seriously but more as something to keep in mind and look for, but if youre thinking about waiting for the prices on G3's to drop because of the release of the G4's, then be careful not to wait too long or you might find out that you cant get a hold of a G3 at all.

I just made that very upgrade (visionteck geforce2 gts to Gainward GeForce3 Ti450 128 meg. The performance increase was obvious. Take running 1024x768 at 32 bit color with all the anti aliasing and all aniostropy you want and STILL get insane framerates. Can even crank it up to 1600 and it's playable, tho slightly slower than you'd want for full on FPS games.
Right now the Gainward golden samples are cheap on newegg.com. If you've got the cash DO IT.
Especially since the G4Ti4200 won't be out for a couple of months. You can always sell a geforce 3 to someone as well, so when the 4200's DO come out, you can upgrade again.

Why get a card w/ 128mb of ram?? Modern apps cant even take advantage of it, besides, cards these days are bandwidth limited. I'm sure you would notice VERY little to none increase over a 64mb card.

I would wait if I were you.

Your overclocked geforce 2 gts is plenty for current games. If you just want to have slightly better graphics then go for it but it's really not worth it until newer and better games come out.

Personally I'm going to wait until Unreal 2 comes out and then upgrade. I'm sure we'll see Radeon xt and maybe radeon 3 and the prices are going to drop no matter how cheap the cards are now.

WHY get a videocard w/128 megs of ram? BECAUSE IT HAS 128 MEGS OF RAM! duh.
Besides, it was like 20 dollars more, just for the bragging rights, it's worth it.
AND eventually that 128 megs will come in handy, either for resale value, or when games actually need that much.
I'll take every edge i can get, hopefully this card will run DOOM3 for me, and that's what I want, at least until 4200 comes out.
